Totally Weird

My dear wifes birthday yesterday. Booked a nice restaurant in the West End for the evening, both got in the car, started up my 997.2 pdk (bought new in March).
Started the windscreen wipers. Whoops, forgot my wallet. Switched the engine off forgetting to put the wiper stalk in neutral (not that you should need to).

Came back to the car, started the engine again.....dead wipers. Washers work, wipers stuck in mid position. Obviously couldn't go anywhere with dead wipers with the weather the way it is at the moment (unless suicide is a desirable option). Luckily I have other cars so the evening wasn't spoilt.

This morning I looked in the fuse box, found the fuse locator leaflet. No obvious fuse for wipers [&o]

Rang my dealer to ask which fuse dealt with the wipers. Their service department promptly called me back advising me there is no fuse that deals with the front wipers. It's a control module that might need re-setting???? They advised me to ring Porsche Assist (certainly can't drive anywhere in this downpour).

Porsche assist turns out to be a fancy name for an RAC guy who knows a few bits about Porsche's. Anyway, he came down, disconnected the battery (his idea of a re-boot). Wipers still dead. Now I've got to wait for a dryish day (hopefully Tuesday) and drive it over to my nearest Porsche service centre. []

Hi Eric. Just a shot in the dark but you could try turning the ignition on to the point just before it turns over and then leave it turned on for five mins or so. If it is some sort of "wiper management pod" then doing this might reset it..? If nothing else this will reset your ECU (fuel management, etc.) and the car will probably be a bit "livelier" for a few miles..!!

Did you have the duck?

Adrian.

Hi Adrian
Many thanks for the suggestion. Will probably try it tomorrow (just going out shortly).

We had seafood at one of my usual haunts, the Pescatori in Charlotte Street. Highly recommended if you like seafood.

Presumably you have tried nudging the wiper arms forwards and backwards with the motor switched on to see if you can bypass the dead spot.

Just a thought! [8|]

Thanks for the tip, Eric! I don't want to get berated for going off-menu - SORRY, topic but I'm in Town early December and I'm booked for The Albemarle (Brown's/Mark Hix, etc...) which I do regularly and is excellent and also hope to finally get 'round to food at The Connaught (Hélène Darroze) where I'm staying. Can't wait!! Taking the misses and friends ice skating @ Sumerset House too which is always a great laugh!

Hope the wipers sort themselves out!!

Adrian.

Update!

Followed both Clive and Adrian's suggestions (both at the same time I might add).
Incredibly the wipers are now working....... eeek!

Only slight problem now seems to be the PSM warning light which came on since the RAC guy disconnected the battery. He suggested turning the steering from lock to lock with the engine running (which I tried) but the warning light is still on. In all honesty the 'Porsche trained' RAC guy didn't inspire me with confidence. Will have a read through the manual to see if I can find something there.

Thanks for your help guys, much appreciated.

You will probably need to visit your OPC in order for them to reset the ECU and extiguish the warning light.

Clive

The PSM alarm will auto reset if you drive the car a few hundred yards. Mine did.
Hi Geoff,
Yep, had a read of the manual. That's exactly what happened.
Manual states turn the steering wheel to each side whilst stationary (engine on), then drive in a straight line for a short distance (not easy in Cuffley lol).
Reset itself perfectly.

OK, I've learned something. Sorry for the duff info.

That's the trouble with Ferrari drivers pontificating on the latest Porsche stuff! [8|] :ROFLMAO:

Are you sure your car wasn't built by Alfa Romeo.......................

Or Aston Martin?

Hell no lol

First bit of trouble (if you can call it that), I've had with the car since purchase from new in March. All in all very happy with the car. :)

On the subject of Weird things happening to Electronics, each day my CD changer will refuse to load and play any of the 6 CDs in the system. If I listen to the radio for a while( whilst driving) then try again the CDs will play and select normally.

The OPC has checked the sytem, and been unable to find a fault.

Any ideas on how to fix this problem or should I ask for a warranty exchange CD Changer ?
