Toyo R888's

255/40ZR17's are no problem, but the 205/50ZR17's are not available --- the nearest being 215/45ZR17 91W RF.

Without wheelspacers and with normal ride height, would this be a problem ?

Their overall diameter is 10mm smaller --- is the speedo drive on the front wheels ?

I can't imagine the width would be a problem because the 18" rims take a 225mm wide tyre.

Anybody know the answer for sure ? Thanks !

Most people using R888s use 225/45x17 on the front - no problem at all. I've got this size on my cup car, and had the same on my '90 C2. Slight rubbing on the C2, but got that with 205/50x17 as well, cured with 5mm spacers.

Many thanks Ian, is there any real advantage to the 225 ?

If Porsche chose 255 / 205 isn't 255 / 215 closer than 255 / 225 ?

Chris

I have been racing with these tyres and using the 225's on the front. It really balances the car nicely. So much so, I don't need the spare wheel and a tank full of gas to help get front end grip. My lap times have come down.

As for why Porsche chose the sizes they did, I suspect it had as much to do with what was available rather than what was optimal.

Just for info, the original pre-production cars (as tested by the press in germany) used 225/45x17 on the front.

I've just had Toyo R888 215/45s and 255/40s fitted , and was coming from Dunlop Direzza DZ02G fronts in 215/45 and Dunlop Formula R D01J rears in 265/40 ( spacers necessary!) . Will be interesting to see if there's less apparent understeer [;)] All in 17 inch of course. Spa PCF days will be first use in anger.

Thanks everybody.

I have settled on 225's for the front.

Toyo were very good with direct feedback --- as was their dealer who seemed very switched on --- their advice mirroring yours.

Tony, 'particularly interesting that the test cars were also fitted with 225's.

I am hoping for substantially longer road life than I have experienced with my previous PS Cups --- and maybe a little more grip in the wet, though I am told that on the track the PS Cups are better in extremis. I don't think I'm capable of this !!

I have bought the tyres. Can anyone suggest the best place to get them fitted in West Yorkshire, Leeds area? Needs to be a magnesium alloy friendly place!

Hi Paul, Metal Magic in Barnsley will fit them for you...they are experienced with mags and are very very careful. They are only 2 minutes off junc 37 M1...about 20 mins away from Leeds maybe? Only a thought Paul...ring me if you want their number pal.

My 964 RS used to have a tedious habit of tending to understeer that took a little driving around (making sure I turned in on brakes to get some bite) ; I bet the larger front tyre will help though be interesting to see how inner edge fares if running heavy camber?

Kind regards
