Toyo R888s

about 4.5 to 5mm I think, certainly no more.

I'd check mine but they've done a couple of track days and sprints :)

would it be worth trying 888 over michelin cups?? all ive used on my 18s were cups..dont want to start a debate[]

Rich, I use 888. If you are starting out with trackdays, you will probably do better to start with road tyres, as there is so much more to consider at the start over concerns about getting heat in the tyres.
On the road 888 and such R tyres are acceptable, they are noisier and require care in very wet conditions. They are only useful for driving to trackdays to participate, rather than spectate, [:D],if you mileage is mostly road, then road tyres are the better option.

The 888 start out at 6mm, they seem to wear fairly quickly initially, then wear seems to abate for some reason and they stay at 3-4mm, far longer than they did at 5-6mm...for some reason?

..........Thinking about it, the compound probably hardens up once it has been through a decent heat cycle or two?

One of the things about R compound tyres is that they are designed to offer their grip in a high temp range than a standard road tyre. You will not be able to get that sort of temp consistently driving on the road. As a result you will probably end up with less grip whilst on the road.

So it does depend what you intend with to do with them. Of course they may not be for your RS at all!! [:D]
