Toyo T1R or Falken 452 ??

About to replace my rear tyres and its a toss up between the two tyres above. Currently have Toyo T1S's all round and was going to continue with the T1R's as replacements. I have C4 coupe BTW

Then I read that the Falken 452's were a better all round tyre and it had some good reviews.

So does anyone have experience of these two makes of tyre?

As I only do about 3000 miles per annum I am not looking for anything too pricey as replacements. I would rather waste my money at the pump!!

I had the Flkens, and to be honest found them very wooden,,not a great deal of feedback and not wet weather freindly..

No matter how many miles I do in my 964, skimping on the bits that keep me in contact with the road would make me nervous every time I drove it. Just my 2p.

Thanks Steve.....

What tyres are you running? How are they compared to a more/less expensive brand?

With the wide variety of tyres on offer and differences in performance it would be interesting to hear other peoples experiences as opposed to just commenting on how "I would not put budget tyres on my car..." After all tyres have to meet minimum legislative requirements before they can be sold....

I expect there are others in a similar situation to mine, who have aspired to owning a 911 for years and when they get the opportunity, have to balance finances in such a way that they can enjoy their cars.

Now if you had said to me " I bought tyre X for £150 and it lasted 15,000 and loads of grip in the wet/dry as opposed to tyre Y which cost £50 and was worn out after a couple of trackdays......."

You're right to say that tyres are very much a personal opinion, often based on experience. For the road I use Continental sport contact 2 (N2 Porsche rated). I recently got a complete set fitted by Protyre motorsport for £475 which I think is a good price for quality tyres. The rears last about 10,000 miles and the fronts twice that. Wheels are 17 inch BTW.

I've got some Yokohama AVS sports on my track wheels. So far these have shown excellent dry grip (better than the contis) but I'm not expecting them to last long! [:D]

ETA - I've used contis on the boxster for the last 3 years so my experience with them has been good hence why I'm still using them.

thanks for your replies

i have been looking here for tyre reviews

I would second that. i think the sports are as goos as you will get - maybe a tad harder/more noisy than the conti's although it seems to vary with suspension set-up and road condition. Just wish the Michelin's were not so pricey.

Anyone tried Bridgestone S02s?

I have these on my 944S2. They hold on tight but are prone to sudden breakaway at the limit, this is relatively easy to control on a 944, but may be more of an issue on a 964, I have not actually reached this limit yet, so I can't vouch for this from personal experience I'm afraid.

I used to run PZeros on the S2 which I was very happy with, but they are no longer available in the standard 16" sizes.

The 964 runs P6000s, which were on when I brough it and have plenty of life left.

I have to say that I have never been a fan of Contis, but this may be an old preduice from years ago that they tend to be 'soft', this may no longer be the case these days though.

Any other comments? You could talk for hours about tyres!!

Have two pairs of S02's love em, great wet weather grip, slightly noisey when wearing out, not really felt a lot of snap oversteer, and would buy them again.

Went for the Falkens in the end, ordered from Camskill Thursday lunchtime and arrived Friday afternoon!!

Tried to get them fitted yesterday -

ATS would not fit them as they "werent N rated tyres and we would be liable should anything happen...." What??
apparently Kwik fit have the same policy...
Went to Bathwick tyres in Swindon and drove into their empty fitting bay and asked about fitting, the guy took one look at the 964 and said "£45 each plus vat" trying not to laugh in his face I asked why so much "thats how much we charge" ... I just laughed, muttered something about them not actually being busy and drove off....

Decided to use the tyre fitting place around the corner (they had said they were too busy earlier) on the off chance and managed to fit both tyres in about 45 minutes and charged me £30 all in!!

Obviously Bathwick couldnt be bothered with my business despite their bays being empty and ATS was a bit of a surprise to me.

I have just replaced all 4 tyres on my 1989 C4. I purchased Bridgestone S02'S which were N3 rated. The difference to the way the car now drives and handles is astonishing - £470 very well spent!
