TPM compatibility with rims

I enquired at an OPC about getting Sport Classic wheels for my 2006 turbo (sticking with my current wheels is my leading choice but want to explore the options). They checked my VIN and concluded that the Sport Classic wheel isn't compatible with the version of TPM sensors used with the TPM system on my car. Does anyone know a way around it?

Thanks Ralph. I'm less concerned about maintaining a TPM functionality. They basically wasn't looking to sell me the wheels. They didn't suggest disabling the system but I didn't think to suggest if reprogramming the car not to look for sensors was an option i.e. wipe the TPM function.

Surely the internal profile of the rim will be pretty similar if not the same for any of the wheels of identical sizes?

I would do some more research rather than trust an OPC VIN query TBH - I appreciate you may have warranty concerns but it's worth physically checking a sensor inside a wheel rim before dismissing it. (I was told categorically that the 993/964 RS engine mounts would not fit my car - but they do and went straight in). There are a couple of types of Beru OEM sensors and it's not rocket science to find out which one it is.

I had good support and prices when i replaced the one's on my Cayman from http://www.rlauto.com (no association - they are UK based). The range of TPMS systems is not as huge as people think and there are many different car manufacturers using the same wheel sensors.

Well, according to Suncoast

you can fit them on a Gen 1 car and you "reuse stock tire (sic) pressure monitors"

I would get a second opinion.....[;)]

The Gen 1 and Gen 2 cars just use a different frequency, as far as I know?

PS - I wouldn't ditch the TPMS - far too useful...[:)]

I agree - just stick to Beru (OEM) and they should work fine - avoid the aftermarket stuff, I had very flaky pairing with the replacement ones I bought but once they were swapped for Beru they paired in 10 mins. and have worked fine from last year.

I asked another OPC and they said they just need to order a set of the older sensors and they can fit them to the wheels (the current sensors tend to break when removed, hence a new set). Don't know why the first OPC couldn't do that. I have since decided to stick with the turbo wheels. They look so right on the car. Will get some coloured crest centre caps when I can remember[:)]

A-Ha..! There you are 6. Congrats on the new purchase - somehow I missed your earlier post.

The car looks really great - certainly, I'd stick with the original turbo wheels and keep the black front splitter too (the red/black contrast looks better and "lightens" the front end appearance).

Thanks Jeff. Really enjoying the car. The thrust is awesome and negates and text book theories about weight. The Sport Mode on the PASM isn't too harsh and makes it quite nimble. The trasmission takes to the short shifter very well and relative to previous, doesn't feel notchy at all. The colour was a bonus[:)]
