TQ: 165 tyres for '77 924

Had a phone call from member Adrian Allen who is having trouble obtaining tyres for his 1977 924.

The 'problem' is that his car needs 165 x 14 tyres (on 5.5J rims) to replace his old Michelins, several telephone calls have only turned up one result - Protyre at £120 a tyre...

Are there any of the correct size tyres still out there?

Yep, he doesn't have an internet connection but we have discussed the tyres shown on there - one thing we're not sure of though is the profile size - I was thinking 70 but am not positive that is correct.

Peter Morgans book says that the original steel wheel was 5.5Jx14, tyres were 165HR14 (no profile shown?). After that the first alloys were 6Jx14 with 185/70HRx14.

Perhaps the 165HR14 never had a profile listed, although that seems odd. What does it say on the sidewall of his existing Michelins?

The original tyres do not show a profile size according to Adrian, and the handbook for the car also lists the tyre size witout the profile.

I find this odd but it must be possible to calculate the profile just by measuring from the rim to the tread in millimetres?

Tried this search on www.mytyres.co.uk and found this

You really need "V" rated tyred on the 924. T is ok for road use obviously, but if you do a track day and forget, don't be surpised if the tyre lets go and pitches you non value agreed pride and joy into the armco.
