TQ: Alternator

Peter, a prospective member needs some help:[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]My problem is that after almost two years of getting the car back on the road I now have a problem that the ignition light forr the battery/alternator does not come on with the ignition start and the engine does not switch off with the ignition. I have taken the dashboard dial apart and tested the bulb and its contact on the backplate and had the alternator off and the starter motor connecting wiring but all to no avail. The earthing cable for the alternator to the engine block 'looked' a frayed type of flexible gauze which stupidly I did not remove - it looked quite oily and my next move is to try a separate earth to the engine block or remove the existing, clean it up and replace it. My question is how likely is this likely to be the problem.[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]The Bosch alternator is charging on the dash dial at about 14 as it is supposed to - but interestingly enough the car did switch off at ignition for a few days before I realised that the alternator was not charging - I gave it a tap with a hammer in case it was jammed and it started charging staright away BUT then would not switch off again!![FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]Could an alternator show charging ok even if not adequately earthed to the engine block but still not adequately earth through this strap to ground the warning light and light it up? If it is the alternator trather than the earthing of it could you advise where I could obtain a refurb kit for it to have a go at it myself?[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
 
If I was in your shoes you would be better of getting a new alternator and new earth cable wich cost no more £10 from an OPC for an earth cable only. You could try to fix the alternator yourself but, by the time you have stripped it an got all the appropriate parts etc etc you would have spent about the same kind of money.

Or

Take the car to an auto electrics place. This would be the best advice I would give as I am at the same electrical starting fault with my car and got to the stage where I'am now going to strip it and restore another 924 Le Mans.

I would find out why the engine wont switch off. There is definitely a fault there, and I would look at the ignition switch and surrounding wiring, or check for a water leak into your fuse box from the battery tray while the car has been out of commision for two years. The symptoms are probaly all realated to a common denominator.

By the way the 924 Le mans was only offered in the 1980 model year. If you google it and check out wikipedea it makes it clear that all 1030 variants of the Le Mans 2.0 were producd in 1980, thus the chassis numbers would have "A" as a year letter. I know of someone who put martini stripes on a 911 once and fobbed it off as the genuine article. Caveat Emptor.
 
The 2 lite N/A car that I owned had this problem. I had to switch it off by unhooking the battery on 2 ocaisions. The problem WAS the alternator.
