TQ: Central speaker

How do you get to the centre speaker on the dashboard - mine has never worked and I'd like to have a go at fixing it.

Ta [:)]

Well apparently yes.

I've shone a torch at it and peered into the grill, and it looks like there is an Edwardian speaker in there, covered in dust. Another website says that the cover 'just lifts off' but I've pulled it around as much as I dare and I can't get it off, don't want to bust it.

That grill is a push fit. There are four pegs on the reverse of the grill which push into four nylon inserts in the pressed hardboard recess. Having it working wont help the balance of your stereo though.

It's just really tough to pull off, that's all. I did once consider turning it into a central subwoofer but not sure there are too many 6x4 units that would be suitable [:D]

Hi Paul are you sure about this, as far as I am aware the central speaker is a relic from when you could still get Mono radios, if you have 2 speakers in the rear then I would perhaps leave it alone.
There may be a risk of breaking something for not much gain.
Unless of course you're going for a 'full on' 5.1 Dolby surround system and you need a centre speaker. [:D]

My 924 Lux has 2 speakers and the dash location is empty BUT my 924 series 2 Turbo has 2 in the back and one in the dash. You can balane the front to back bias and while I use the back speakers for music I find the dashboard speaker better for road reports and other non music programs.

I am about to put a 150W 6x4 speaker in my one, will let you know how it go'es. fits in there fine just got to find the time to put the wires in.

Ron.

I managed to remove the grill to find, er, nothing.

No speaker or wiring - very strange.
Why put a grill there at all?

Certainly it could be very handy to mount a sat-nav device there.
Perhaps Porsche thought ahead [;)]

Hi Paul,
I suspect it would be purely down to production costings, ie. 1 dashboard mould and production line rather than 2.

I think this was designed when the 924 wasn't going to be a Porsche, pre 1976 mono was the norm so they probably thought that was the best place for one speaker.
I have a seven led alarm indicator wired up in mine, looks a bit weird 'cos' you cant actually see the unit itself.
Great for keeping your drugs in.
Cheers,
