TQ: Windscreen demisting

I have been struggling to demist the windscreen on my '83 2 litre.
The footwell and dashboard vent heating works fine but nothing comes out of the slats in the top of the dash despite having both the controls set to the left and the fan on full

Is it something as simple as a loose air hose or more complicated?
 
Over the years, the dash cracks, and the fibre board used to form the dash distorts at the same time and closes or occludes the heater vents. Added to this is the problem that the plenum chamber for the demist vents is crudely stapled to the main frame of the dash and separates allowing large volmes of air to heat the area behind the dash rather than ducting it up to the windscreen. It is simple enough to glue to the plenum chamber back on using PVA and I have used a papier mache technique to further reinforce the the joint using layers of newspaper soaked in a thinnned out PVA solution. The downside is that the dash needs to be taken out, which is a job of about three hours just to get to it. I would live with it until the warm weather comes and remedy it for next year.
 
Dash is easy to remove but take a long time and patience, especially if you can't see the screws near the pillars......(personal experienced from a blind french man)

But the trouble is to put it back together. If you can afford it, take it off, send it to the US to be redone, and recoated and it will stay perfect for ever......

If you do it, it might be time to change the fan and other bits. I had to remove my one a few times for different reasons and end up to get a second hand one because I damage it.

The cracks in the dash really do not bother me unless, as 924nutter says it is affecting the operation of the vents.
I have to say that I'm not looking forward to taking it all apart but it would be nice to have everything working again.

That makes 3 people I know who have experience of dashboard removal so I don't think I'll be short of advice when I need it. [:)]
 
to be honest, the most difficult part I think are :

- take your time and be patient
- remember where everything goes back.... was my problem [:)]
 
If you have no intermediate fan speeds check out the connections to the balast resistors which if memory serves lurk somewhere accessible after the dash is out. IIRC they are a sort of discoloured cream in colour and are about 1.5 inches in diameter.
Bear in mind that the ventilation fan runs very slowly even if the switch is in the off position.

On the full speed setting both ballast resistors are bypassed. At 1983 model year you should have the rotary speed control.
