Tracing History

Hi Guys,

Any thoughts on how I can trace the history of my car? Will my local OPC be able to give me any service histroy from when it was a tad younger? and how about previous owners and the like, anyone done this?

Cheers

Hi,

I have no history before I knew the car unfortunately which was when the previous owner took custody. So the V5c option is out, have heard the same for OPC and do try to avoid them.

Looks like I will be digging the chassis numbers out.

Thanks guys

You can request previous history from the DVLA if you send them a cheque for £5 along with your pleading letter. They have no obligation to provide the data but will respond to a reasonable request. I did it with my 964 and just said that I wanted to complete the history and I got a full list of the previous UK owners along with registration number changes and copies of all the documents that went with it.

Just send your letter and £5 to:

Yes, so long as you are the Registered owner, you can request the ownership history from DVLA.

OPCs are normally pretty helpful, but it's Porsche Cars GB who will be able to verify the original spec details, again for a fee.

Also, why not post the info and a photo on here - current members may well be able to help.

When I bought my car-blimey it's 15 years ago this year!-the OPC gave me a copy of my car's original spec for free.Since then they have been shifting hundreds of cars and not as interested in doing favours like that.Maybe with the credit crunch things will have come full circle and they will look after the long term owner of older cars again.
I can second the DVLA route aswell.I got mine via my local registration office who forwarded my enquiry to Swansea.I originally asked the local office to find out if the car's original registration number had been reallocated and they said it hadn't.The nice woman in the local office said that they do not usually issue the number back to the car unless there is proof of some sort.So I got the original number etched on the windows and applied for the number. After less than a minute of inspection I got the original number back on the car!!! I asked the Inspector if he wanted to check the VIN number and he said " I s'pose I may aswell " No wonder there is so much fraud.

They are more careful now and actually, I believe its policy to reissue the original number back to a car where possible (certainly happened each time I have moved my personal plate on to another car)

When I had a car stolen, I had to wait 12 months before the registration could be re-claimed, no idea why.

The main reason the OPC will not give you details that there is a thing called the data protection act which forbids them from giving out previous owners information .If you can trace a previous owner they can on your behalf ask them to sent it on to you .Years ago before all this red tape when I had a 911 the opc have me copies off all the invoices ever issued to that vechicle no matter where it was serviced The DVLA seems the best route but will only unearh the owners not what work has been done over the years. Good luck in your search
