Tracing Porsche 356 History

A few months back I bought a 356 from long term ownership, a BT6 which appears to be an original RHD as it has the T5 style tank and the dash appears original. The car really needs restoring, but has an MOT!
I have sent off for a "COA" from Porsche but I'm not sure how much info this will give me. From speaking to the previous owner, it would seem as though she bought it in 1984 in London but prior to this it was owned by a soldier in Scotland and carries a UK registration that was issued to it in 1984. The car carries some suspicious holes in the glovebox lid which looks like stopwatches have been screwed on, as well as extra (now redundant) switches and warning lights on the dash.I wonder if the car was abroad before this as it gives the date of first registration as the date the previous owner acquired it and there are no previous keepers. Any ideas? The VIN no is 120435.
Any suggestions?

You would be better emailing Fred Hampton who is the 356 Register Secretary.

His email address and telephone number can be found in Porschefile.

Couple of starting place for you apart from the 356 Register guy

First one may help with vin. http://www.autoatlanta.com/life/vin/vin.php

Second - I do believe PRS were making up a database of UK VIN numbers so a call to them may help.

Your 356 from its chassis number is a 1962 356B Coupe T6 bodied with drum brakes. The description of the fuel tank shows that has to be refuelled from under the front hood and is correct for that year, later RHD models were still refuelled that way until they built a new different fuel tank for the disc braked RHD 356C models. John is correct to direct you to PR Services on: www.prs356.com or on 01277 630099 as they are collating all the information known about RHD cars and they will almost certainly be able to help. Porsche Cars can supply FOC a Certificate of Authenticity and can be contacted at: customer.assistance@porsche.co.uk they will be able to give you a limited amount of information based upon the Chassis number and the Engine number as well as the gearbox number. Information about previous owners can be obtained at a fee from the DVLA who can supply photocopies of the previous Log Books, ask fro form VQ7 at your local Post Office. You might like to meet other owners with similar models at the Classics at the Castle meeting at Castle Hedingham on Sunday 2nd September.
Good luck
