Track camera holder

Tom,

I don’t think that a screen-mounted device will be allowed on track - it’s too insecure - but you should ask the track day organiser for advice. Most devices - cameras, etc. - that I’ve seen have been clamped securely in position.

Hi All, Does anyone use their phone with the Porsche track precision app? I am interested in using it next month but the next things is, what's the best way to hold the phone? I have this: https://www.belkin.com/uk/accessories/car-mounts/car-universal-mount/p/p-f8m978/ but unsure if it will be enough. Cheers, Tom

i have used this mount to hold my phone as a data logging display…. but trying to record video from your phon mounted to your windscreen is going to give mixed results… depending on how well the video stabilisation in your phone works. I usually tethered it also

in the end I decided to get a go pro…which can be mounted to the bar behind the seats with a clamp (recommend manfrotto superclamp) or stuck with adhesive…. it‘s safer and you can get a better view from this location anyway IMO.

You can usually import external video into PTPA, HLT, RaceChrono as well to get data overlaid video… some of those apps are better than others.

I think they will allow a screen mount but only if you have some sort of extra tether to secure the mount if the suction cup fails. placing the mount near the rear view mirror and using a cable tie from mont to mirror should suffice. it would also be a good idea to have some extra attachment for the phone to holder. Big rubber band should do the job. I gave up trying to use the Track precision App to record video as well as data. I let my dash cam record video and the Track Precision app records the data. When it connects successfully which is not always.

You’re right Graham. The two-piece assembly (clip and phone holder) is designed to locate your phone securely on the centre console, so it’s no use for recording video but would be good for an information app.

I have used this Joby clamp mount which securely locks the phone in place using the red lever. You need to explore the web site as they come with fittings you don't need but as can be seen, the clamp is compatible with GoPro fixings. They now have a different model clamp which looks to be just as secure method as mine.

Hi Tom,

there is a well placed strut bar at neck level directly behind the seats in the 718… you could mount a go pro extremely securely with a go pro clip and some extra tape… it’s perfectly positioned to give some really cool footage directly positioned centrally in the car.

would that work for what your trying to achieve?

Mark

Hi All, Thanks for all the suggestions, I do also own a go pro and I think I will go with the option of mounting that to the bar behind the seats and then use the app for data. If anyone happens to be on the track day at Goodwood on 7th June I will see you there! Cheers, Tom

hi tom - Yep that’s a good way to do it … Also what you could to is get the gopro head strap and mount it on the side of the helmet - I’ve just experimented with it and it’s fantastic - I’m looking to get some track footage too… I tried the head strap out the other day and it worked a treat…
