Hi there, I have just noticed that the o/s track control arm balljoint on my s2 has a split gaitor. the joint is ok and still has grease in it but the gator has to be replaced does anyone know where I can get one on its own, many thanks John.

Whole arm, or just balljoint, or just a new gaiter? ECP supplied me with two complete arms last year, at a decent price. And I am sure that Bert will be as helpful as ever. Oli.

Worth replacing the arms in my experience as it removed slop I didn't know I had to a massive degree, though Oli didn't find the same.

Here we go, I said that I had found a split gaiter, I said that the gaiter was still full of grease and the balljoint was OK, I do not need new arms, I have found that american company will supply me with custom or OEM at $10 a pair plus postage, thanks John.

Fen I know you mean well but If I say that the balljoint is OK then it is OK The only real way of checking the ball joint as we all know is to drop the arm from the strut and check the ball preload or resistance. this is olso how you remove the split gaitor. all I asked was if anyone knew where I could get a replacement gaitor so we do not have to start talking about replacement, all the best John.

I know what you asked, and now I know that you know no more than I did for the months I argued with my indie against getting new arms that I "didn't need". The ball joint is nothing to do with it; the wear occurs at the rack end where a tiny amount of slack can make what I felt was an imperceptible amount of slop in the steering, but once gone it was night and day. You may not need arms, and I'm not saying you do or don't, but I was offering you (and anyone else reading th thread now or in the future) the benefit of my evidently greater experience in this very specific area. If you're not interested in being offered advice or greater depth of information then fine, but there is no need to be stroppy after it has been offered in good faith. I'm pleased you sorted yourself out and I'm sorry I wasn't also able to offer you an answer to your specific question as well as what I did offer. Broadly as sorry as I am that I bothered to type a response at all if I'm honest.

Apologies for the thread hijack, but what is the consensus on the best replacement arm? OEM? One of the aftermarket types? Seems like this is one of the last major unresolveds (along with S2 cam-chain/cam-sprocket) on these cars.

Didn't know there were different types, to be honest ... I bought the one that ECP sold me ... (Don't want to be rude, but we are talking about the tie-rod that connects the rack to the steering hub here; I know there are choices when it comes to the balljoint at the bottom of the hub, where it connects with the wishbone, but that's a different component.) Oli.

Hi Oli, Sorry, hence my "tread hijack" disclaimer. Re tie rods, I considered Fen's response definitive... Best regards Sean

If we're talking arm, my money will go on an aftermarket one with a 19mm pin if/when the time comes. For a road car a Hartech or Gilmour reconditioned OE seems to meet most people's requirements.
