Track day insurance for specific days out

Craig,

I think you'd find it cheaper to arrange insurance with a company who includes track days in their general policy. ManningUK, ClassicLine and Locktons should be able to help, although there are others.

Jeff

Hi all, just renewed my general insurance cover, but will be doing a couple of track days during the year. Any recommendations re suppliers who will cover such days separately?
Cheers
Craig

If you do find anyone reasonable , Craig, please post as I need someone to cover me in June. Thanks, Ian.

"A Plan Insurance" are worth a call, they cover some tracks it appears

I insured with Manning in March this year, they cover unlimited track days as long as they’re with an accredited member of the ATDO, there’s a list here:

http://www.atdo.co.uk/atdo.php?pg=members&ls=all&title=members

£500 fully Comp, protected NCD, excess of £250. I’m 45, no points, 1 minor car park scrape 2 years ago. Car parked on drive, no commuting.

NB - your excess goes up to 10% of vehicle value in the event of a trackday accident.

I called a number of trackday only insurers and they were coming in at £250-350 per track day!

if you’re still in your ‘cooling off period’ you could cancel your new policy and give manning a call.

The PCGB Lockton policy only covers PCGB trackdays.

Can I ask what the car is and annual mileage?

That price is for a 2010 987 S, annual mileage of not more than 7k (Current odometer reading of 49k).

Like i said, only social, domestic & pleasure (SDP) driving, no commuting.

Ive recently done the PCGB valuation of the car at £30k, which is what I’ve insured it for with Manning.

Thanks.

I'm at £663 for 10k miles but higher insured value and car is on the 991 3.8 tariff because of the engine swap so I guess a comparable rate given the differences.

Ian, I think you will struggle to get cover because it's not a UK track day company that we're going with.

I'm sure you're right Steve but worth asking.

Overall my cover with Classic Line is good with adequate UK cover but not Europe (Spa in this case).

Competition car insurance will provide one off track day cover. I used them once in the past and was fairly expensive IIRC:

I used REIS once... I was in Milan Airport at about 4pm returning to the UK the day before a track day when they called me to say the underwriter had exceeded his policy limit and my policy (which was for two events) had been cancelled. Needless to say I was not a happy bunny but I managed just before going on track to arrange single event cover at the same cost as the two day cancelled policy. They did give me a discount on a rearranged second policy but I decided that a road and track policy would be far more cost effective and reliable.

Just had a positive experience with REIS re fully comp insurance plus up to 6 track days (which ends up covering nicely the 2 I've got booked, which prompted the original post).

And re track day only coverage, Adrian Flux actually turned out to have a competitively priced product, well worth having a chat with them

Good to hear you've got it sorted

Ian & Steve ,

is the lack of cover with Classicline specific to your polices or will classicline not cover pistonclub at all? I can't remember what Classicline's rules were regarding this now? I haven't booked yet and this might make life tricky.

Laurence I've not been with classicline since the 964. But I remember they would cover Spa and the like for £50 per day as long as it was with a UK track company. As far as current track insurance is concerned I have a different attitude to risk than most in that I 'self insure'.

I had been of the same mindset with the GT3 Cup. But it's gradually crept up in value to a point where it would be foolish for a man of my means (or lack of em) not to insure it. To be honest even the 996 Carrera would not be an easy pill to swallow if i lost it. Fortunately the 996 is usually covered by classicline for most trackdays. But likely not this one ! At least a quote on the Carrera would be a bit less than the Cup.

Not being a trackday participant I've always assumed that trackday insurance was compulsory. I'm curious to know, when you choose to 'self insure', what would be the position if someone else damaged your car, you damaged someone elses car, or you damaged some armco or something (let's say just on the UK tracks)?

Hi Andrew, track day insurance is not compulsory. If you have it, it only covers damage to your own car. If you damage someone else's it won't pay for that. Nor is there any third party cover. Nor will it pay for damage to the track. In the latter case there is usually a clause in the contract that you sign to drive the circuit for them to have the right charge you for repairs. However, it's rare for them to enforce that (except for the Nurburgring where they charge for armco damage and track closure costs which is why it's very difficult to get insurance for it). You'll find that on many general track days most cars are not insured because they're not worth very much.
