Track day Noise

I have 2 planned track days this year and I am slightly concerned about Noise levels.

I have a dansk 84mm rear silencer and sports pre silencer.

from inside the car it is louder than stock, but have no idea about the db level.

Does anybody have a simular set up and know the db level?

Good question Mel.

The very cheapest form of insurance is to buy some steel wool - maybe 000 or 00 grade. This comes in a bundle maybe 100mm across and you can just stuff the bundle up the exhaust pipe. Its a temporary fix but it works and its easier than a bolt on mini-silencer.

By way of reference, a std 3.2 should be about 97-98db (although a lot depends on the measurer and method), however, when my crossover pipe was quietly falling to pieces and had holes in it I was tested at 104db ! So fairly small things can make a big difference. My slightly educated guess (after testing a few cars and being tested a few times and fooling around with a borrowed noise meter) is that you will be about 99-101db. Essential Simon has a noise meter you may be able to borrow so you can test in advance.

I did two track days at Castle Combe in April, each with a 100db limit.

My '82 SC is unmodified. The readings were 99.6 and 100.0 respectively. Just got in! I would think that anything that sounds louder than standard when you're in the car would produce a higher reading.

If you're going to Castle Combe, there is a performance parts shop outlet there, and they do a good trade in bolt-on silencers! Would be as well to check they've got some kit for 911s before going up - most of their customers were Ferrari owners when I as there.

Good luck.

Melv,

I am planning on the late summer croft day organised by specialist cars and PCGB Donnington Park - whenever it's going to be announced.

Richard,

Steel wool??? - never heard of that one before. stupid question, but is there no risk of damage?

Croft and Donington? Don't worry about noise.....

Mel
PS Steel wool will blow out if not anchored in.....

Yes, but it gets you past the noise test [;)] A little creative use of stainless wire will keep it in.
