Track Day Tyre/Wheel Recommendations

Having overheated my front left Toyo T1-R doing a trackday at Croft recently, I am thinking of getting some cheap/tatty alloys and track-biased tyres for using on future track days. This means that I don't have to pay for new tyre(s) after each track day. What would your recommendations be, and how much should I be budgeting for wheels and tyre combination? Also, what size wheels and tyres should I be running? I seem to recall that someone suggested that I either had too much rubber at the back and/or not enough at the front - I have currently got Boxster 17" alloys with 255/40 at the back and 205/50 at the front.

How many laps do you do per session? I have been using the new Toyo R888 which are an R-spec tyre. They are great for short events as they get up to heat pretty quickly. I have a friend who has Mich. Pilots and they don't get up to any usable temp. and he's suffered for it, to the point of putting his '89 952 into a wall and is now having the whole thing resprayed and fixed. Could have been much worse. The R-spec are so much better than street tyres as you'll find out if you get some.
 
Alternatively you could find someone who has a set of TurboS wheels, 2 fitted with slicks 2 with PzeroC and with 4 part worn michelin cup tyres (unfortunately all 225's) who has just upgraded to big blacks meaning the wheels no longer fit, then make him an offer he can't refuse for the lot or wait till they go on ebay.
Now where might one find such a person? [;)]

I agree. The A032R is a brilliant tyre (and were ultimately the control tyre for the Kit Car Series). I don't believe they come in Porsche friendly sizes though. You would probably have to go for the A048R which do come in Porsche sizes, look even more aggressive, but will be outrageously expensive.
 
I am looking at getting 18 x 9" on the front and 18 x 10" on the back shod with 255/35 front and 285/30 on the rear. Toyo R888's will probably be my choice. I have these on my current wheels which are 17 x 8.5" 235/45 f and 17 x 9" 255/40 r. These have been very good for the short sprint events that we compete in although I did a practice day at Eastern Creek and covered about 45-50 laps in stages and the tyres held up perfectly. These are used on the road as a daily drive too. Very twitchy and quick wearing on the road, hence the need to go for a dedicated 2nd set for the track.
 
Be careful with offset for 10x18's. I have them with 265's and they only just fit. I know Rick has 285's on his wheels, so they do fit with his offset, but not with mine (which is ET53 from memory).
 
I am getting these custom made by Simmons an Aussie brand. I think I'll have to go to 60 offset and run a bit of camber. I can't seem to post a link but check out
www.simmonswheel.com.au I have the OM17's which look great but are a bitch to clean and am getting the FR 18's which are much easier.

Camskill have them listed in 205/55 R16 and 225/50 R16 but to be fairI was suprised as they stopped the smaller (and more popular) sizes a while back much to my annoyance as I think thems better than 48's...

I guess it depends what you call Porsche friendly sizes?!

Anything that will accommodate 17" rims. [;)]
