Track day tyres

As some of you may be aware I have officially comitted to do another Track day.

The question now is what are the best tyres for the job in this modern age.

I need them to be road legal so slicks are out but I will only use them for the track because the big boys wheels will go back on after. They need to fit the cup mag wheels.(17's)

Are the Pirelli Corsa's any good or is there a better alternative.

Thanks

lee

Michelin Pilot Sport Cups are road legal & ideal for trackdays, better performance but don't expect to get 20,000 miles out of them [:D]

opinion - the short list is Pirelli P0 Corsa , Michelin Pilot Sport Cup , Dunlop Formula R D01J

clue - I already voted in reply to your original thread.....'track day vs garage'.....but any of the above would work

see you at brands [;)]

for the 17 inch mags , pzero corsa have 205-255 range of sizes , pick your favourite....dunlops only do 3 sizes 215,235,255 , recommend 215 front 255 rear ..... and michelin pilot sport cups recommend 225 front 255 rear.

Thanks Oldtimer

Has anybody else got any preferences or opinions on sizes, particularly fronts.

Oh and what profiles

lee

Yeh...yeh... don't worry, got it all under control

lee

SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT THE RECOMENDED SIZES ARE INC PROFILE.

Lee -you don't have to shout......

255/40ZR17 -Rear

205/50ZR17 -Front

Have also PM'd u.

Hi. Does any one have experience of running Michelin Pilot Sport Cups on a 964 RS? What are the recommended pressures for road use (cold) and track use (hot)? Also interested to hear of your experiences regarding suspension set for road/track use - is it best to start with factory settings or do any of you have some thouhgts on a good starting point?

All help gratefully received.

Thanks and regards

Hi Laurence

I think production of the SSR's has finished as Dunlop have launched a new tyre that is supposed to be better than them. Try Mr Tyre in Birmingham (Link Here).

Have no feedback on the Toyo's but I know they are popular with the Lotus Elise crowd, as are the Yoko's A048's.

Cheers

Ollie

SSR's replacement is on the Mr Tyre wesbite, its the DZ02G.

Don't know if they have any or if it is available yet, but I hope they have something available as I will be needing some new tyres soon on the RS.

Hi Laurence

I use Dunlop DZ02G tyres which are the successors to D01J. Grip is good even in the cold, but once you get some heat into them they get really sticky.[:D] They are road legal and are not bad in the wet either. In the past I've used Dunlop SSRs (which were good and probably a better compromise tyre, but I don't think they're currently in production) and Michelin Pilot Cup Sport.

Are these tyres just for track use?

Tks they dont come in my sizes ..........there is an 03 coming which will cover285 /295 rears ..maybe even 305 s ......................but dont think its around yet .

DZO2G is nothing like the SSR, they are the D01J replacements as Tim says.
Much more of a pure track tyre, worse in the wet, very noisy on the road & likely to wear much faster than the SSR's. I had them on my 3.2 CS last year - great on track in dry(ish) conditions, but not as versatile as the SSR.

I called Mr Tyre a couple of weeks ago and they had stock of SSRs in 964 RS sizes (although not exactly the right size). I was a bit sceptical about not using the right sizes but people who have used them have not reported any problems so was thinking of giving them a go next. I have always used MPSCs on my car and they are awesome but at nearly twice the price of the SSRs they should be.

If there was a good alternative at the SSR price range I would be very interested.

Tim - do you mind me asking how much the DZ02Gs were? Also do they come with 4-5 mm tread like the MPSCs or 7-8 like SSRs. I find I am getting through the MPSCs rather quickly.

Regards
