Track day virgin

Guest

New member
At a recent meeting of "Porsche minds" at the salubrious drinking and eatery know as Ace Café, London. It came to pass that track day virgins, like my good self, would be best placed to go to Bedford Autodrome, aptly named because it is in Bedford.[8|]

With this in mind, I would welcome some dates when anyone from the club is going up there, as principally I would like to provide them with many hours of amusement with my virginal driving skills.

I do remember that through the haze of cigarette smoke, and "biker armpit smells" tinged with leatherette, that Easter was a date mentioned. I would like to confirm that if possible, because I feel a hairy chesty moment coming on.

Please help a virgin, you know it makes sense. [:)]

But will you have your neons hooked up by then?

Have to build up brownie points first. The neon is detachable, God Mel where have you been.[:D]
Not able to do Sat, but later on in the year?

it's full or I would be there !

Nick, there is another day on the 25th March.... www.fastrakdays.co.uk

c u there !

I'm at Bedford on the 5th March (RMA) which is also my 1st track day (in a GT3) and also at Bedford of the 25th March with the Titanic GT3 crowd.

Come along its a safe if uninspiring track made up of longish straights and slowish corners so very little to tax you apart from getting you braking done early enough.

A small word of warning I phuq'd my discs there in my C4S.

Regards

Kevin

What were you doing to have this problem. This has put me right off. Is this track on on brakes then?

Just do a cooling down lap (it's over 4 miles) without touching your brakes, before you decide to come in -apart from giving the discs a chance to cool down, it's a great way to learn a track and plan ahead!!

Change your braking technique for the track, a short heavy application is far better than long road type application, but work up to your braking point while you practice this.

If it's open pit, 15-20mins tops on track. Give both yourself and your car a chance to cool down!!

Anyway, Kevin's a hooligan.......[:D]

Mel, thanks for the info, most helpful. Do they have instructors there on the day, do you pay for their time etc.

DirtyHarry,
I will let you know if I book, and maybe see you there, be good to see your new car, what's the spec?

Mel,

I resemble that remark!!

But Bedford is hard on brakes because of its design, Dr Palmer didn't want any of his corporate clients having a high speed off so there's nothing like the Goodwood complex of 'No name and St Mary's, Tower or Camp at Castle Combe, Bridge at Silverstone or Pouhon, Blanchimont or Eau Rouge at Spa (you can tell I'm getting itchy waiting for the track day season to get into full flow).

So follow Dr Mels advice and cool down those brakes or be prepared to pay for skimming and new pads at best but more likley new discs.

With a heavy car like a 997 I'd budget for new discs every season.

See you all soon.

Regards

Having recently just lost my virginity I can heartily reccomend Goldtrack events.

Very comprehensive briefing, tough on idiots (though seemed to be less at their events than at others I have heard of), 2 groups rather than open pit lane - novice and experienced, very good tuition available. You get a tuition session free at your first event.

And Melindy is a diamond!

Bedford -I wish they'd ease that stupid, tight left-hander as you pass the hangars on the right -otherwise it flows fairly well........

Kevin -imagine linking those corners up!! Could you take it??[;)]

Mel
-With itchy feet too, or is it just athlete's foot....[&o]

Nick,

Ive taken my 997C2s round bedford and also let Mr Rance have a few laps in the car

( those who do not know him -- " a nutter comes to mind " fair assumption mel ? )

make sure you turn the PSM button to off and the the sports button to on ..

then you will see how good these cars are -- I overtook 2 GT3s when I was last there in October

I will be at Bedford on the 25th in both cars so I will will do a few laps in the 997

see you there

Kevin,

How did you get on at Bedford last week in the GT3
what was it like compared to the C4S ?

just to say I'm gonna be loosing my cherry on the 5th with RMA, so at least anyone going wont be the slowest person on the track that day....

Booked my place for 25th March via Fastrack. Lots of other Porsche's are going, so they can have a good laugh at me[:D]

Nick,

Having had a couple of days to think about it has the bug bitten, clearly you have the smooth driving approach and the willingness to learn that should make you very quick.

If so when's the next one booked for, and are we likley to see a 997 tip on an aggressive suspension set up wearing a set of Corsa's ?

Regards

Kevin
