Track days and repaired tyres

I have just had a puncture repaired on one of my front tyres, I have a track day booked next month and was wondering if anyone new whether it would be safe to run this......

The tyre place seemed to think it'd be ok, If not they could have easily made a few quid out of me for a new tyre!

Any info would be much appreciated!

I was under the impression with the speed rating of the tyres the manufacturers strongly recommend you do not repair the tyres....saying that, I know a couple of GT3s which are regularly tracked on puncture-repaired tyres.

That sounds good, if a GT3 can do it I guess I could do it, I won't be pushing too hard either, looking at the track I doubt I will be getting to speeds much over 100-110mph I guess!

You already have my opinion Tim

Yeh, but the rest of us would like to hear it to Mark. [;)]

I'm not sure on this one. The speed is almost irrelevant in respect of tyres on track days. It is the breaking and cornering forces that generate the heat and wear on a tyre.

Tyres are relatively safe if they go down slowly, as you tend to notice the change in grip levels (not that a repaired tyre should go down) it is if they blow suddenly that problems start.

Whilst track day use puts extreme stress on tyres (you should see my P Zero C's after just one track day) I don't think a properly repaired tyre should be a problem. If anything you could have more problems with a new tyre than you would with a nicely scrubbed one.

Although not ideal, I think I would go with the repaired tyre.

Apparently it depends on where the puncture is. If it is within 2" of the side wall, then the tyre should be renewed. If it is outside this area, it should not make any difference if done properly.

I'm not sure I would go as far as to say that as a tyre that is under inflated will cause the blow-out!

JCB..

Grieg has it.

Z-rated tyres are not recommended to be repaired.

I replaced a nearly new one a couple of weeks ago. (Screw in tyre. "Fixable" according to one fitter, "Best not to" according to his boss...)

My own peace of mind told me to replace, as I was going to be doing a 3K mile trip around Europe, including Autobahn time, and I do partake in the occasional trackday.
