track prep?

There comes a limit where you no longer have a 944 but a completely different car tha happens to look like a 944. There is a chap on Rennlist that has a fully spaceframed '944' with a full fibreglass body. I think he stepped over that mark a long time ago. If your going to spaceframe the car then why not change the shape while you're at it?

Please correct me if I'm wrong [:)], but I think most of the serious 924 and 944 race cars (GTP/GTR etc) were built with at least a space frame nose, so it could be argued that he's being faithfull to that car and not the road version.

I know if I ever have the money I'd have a 944 GTP replica built. [:D]
Best regards,
Peter

OOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHH yyyyeeeessssssssss[8D]

Me too

I love those cars, used to watch `em in anger when I were younger........................

Slifghtly off topic,

We went on R24 WOTY the weekend after easter

On the pre WOTY recce, Darryl met an (presumeably quite wealthy) old school Porsche racer (name escapes me). We went for lunch in his hotel and he agreed to allow a few of us up to his work shop.

There we saw (and he started it up) a Carrera GT,

VV rare and expensive 911 ST (so expensive and rare he`s building a replica)

VV rare 906 (also had to hand a brand new spare engine) with f/glass replica bodywork to save the original

Finally (one of my all time favourites) a Derek Bell licensed 962 with polished carbon fibre (seriously) replacement bodywork [550bhp and 800kgs] - Apparently it only cost the original American owner $700,000 to make [] he got it a bit cheaper but still serious money. I always remember the Count De Rossi [Martini] had a road going one and I`ve wanted one ever since I saw it.

Bl**dy fantastic...........

I have some photos which I can post if anyone interested.

Lol! You don't have to ask! [;)]

I wonder if that was the raw carbon 962 that was at the Brands Porsche festival a couple of years back? Sadly I think I must have deleted the pics off this pc, but will have a look at home tonight.

Thanks Paul, great pics. Just come home to find my copy of PP and on page 87 there appears to be a short write up about the visit too.

I've found some pics of the 962 at brands so will post a couple once I've resized them. Sorry that this thread has gone so far off topic Neil (all my fault [:)]).

Hmm, raw carbon...

Reminds me, I ordered some carbon rod today to make a bonnet prop, not quite the same league I know but it's a bit more hi tech than using a bit of timber [;)]

Well, I might be very wrong but I thought that these were all officially 924 GTP/R/S models and not 944 GTPs etc, albeit laterly fitted with 2.5 litre turbo engines! The book "Classic Porshe Racing Cars" by Michael Cotton describes the 1981 Le Mans cars as "On the entry forms the car was a Porsche 924 GTP, but in reality it was a prototype for the 944 which was about to be announced".

No worries I am loving it! Pictures of pretty much my all time favourite racing cars. My fantasy garage would have that lot plus a chevron B16 so I could drive it back to back with the 906 to compare.
