Track tyre sizes 16" rims

Just obtained some 7 & 9 x 16 Fuchs alloys [:)] which currently have 205 & 225x50 profile tyres on.
Russell Lewis (RSR Engineering) advises that when I replace these to stick with 205 x 50 fronts, but go to 245 x 45 rears.
I was thinking that 225 x 45 fronts would help with braking (which they should) but Russell says it's better to keep the sidewalls vertical, than squeeze a wider tyre on & get the sidewalls bulging.
Sounds like good advice to me, but just wondered if anyone had any first hand experience to share.

Pretty sure RB can help here, but anyone else?

Andy,
I had 225s on 7s on the front of my 3.2 without any obvious adverse reaction on track. My thought would be that the extra grip for braking and turn in would outweigh any penalty due to sidewall flex. But then again I ain't no pro !

Why not go go down a profile and run 205/50 225/45
Dunlop D1OJs are great in this combination. the 225s will strech out to 235 on a 9inch rim
You get the grip from the compound and the benefit of lowering the car 2 1/2% of 205 mm. ie 5 mm fr 5.5 rear
It's worth looking closely at the manufacturers rolling radii in their spec sheets as most tyres seem to differ in this respect.

My anorak is fully zipped up on this subject
