Track Tyres

Hi, we've got a 944 s2 for track use and it's time for some new tyres. We're after some Toyo R888's but the problem is that the car currenbtly has 225/50r16 rears which are fine but then 205/50r16 fronts and Toyo don't do the R888's in this size. nearest is 205/55r16. so whats the best option? different tyre? or change size at front??
Thanks

Go with 225/50/16 all round. You didn't specify what alloys are on the car, so I am presuming the D90s that came with the S2. The front alloy width will be wide enough to take 225/50.

We use 245/45/16s all round on our race cars - matching front and back tyre width for track use will help kill the understeer.

Try and use similar sized front to rears, but also see if the newly re-released Toyo RA1s come in the appropriate size. From all accounts they are superior to the R888s and Toyo have been forced to bring them back from the dead due to the weight of customer opinion.

sorry yes it is the d90's that are still on it. would it be better to use 245/45r16s the same as you then?
Thanks

So what are the widths of the wheels? 7" & 9"? The d90s must be cheap to buy. If you intend using them, buy another set of rears and use them on the front as well so you can run a 'square' setup. Our cars understeer in general. Maybe in an underpowered S2 you can get away with running a staggered setup but if you strip and lighten the car plus upgrade the power, the wider fronts will be better.

FWIW I'm running 225/50 P Zero C's on my Turbo (on 7.5 and 9 Clubsports) just because that's the size I have - they work well, and the same size all round has 2 benefits

1. reduces understeer (as has already been mentioned)
2. reduces costs - you can rotate tyres around

Not unless you have two sets of D90s and you've pinched the pair of wider back wheels to form a set of dry wheels (which is what I've done). The front wheels are too narrow for 245/45; the widest tyres that would fit are 225/50s.

Just wanted to point out that 205/55/16 IS the correct front size for a standard S2 anyway

I do agree that if you have the wheel width you are better off putting the same size all round for a track car
