track tyres

sorry - probably covered to death but

I want some track biased tyres I can use on the road (only to drive to and from the circuit as I'll put my S02's on after the day). I'll be using them on standrad 16" design 90 rims.

I'm looking for improved grip over my S02's in the dry and good wear rate (I'd want them to last a dozen track days)

I'm considering:
- Toyo 888's (£110 ish)
- Kumho Ecsta (£120ish)
- Pirelli Corsa (£160ish)

Any views on the above or have I missed any contenders? Always looking for a bargain solution.

I have a lowered sports set up which is good but not race car firm, so super grippy tyres may well overwhelm the chassis.

Any advice gratefully accepted.

I've heard good things about the 888's and they are priced very competitively, have you considered the Dunlop range?

I have SSR's on my RS and they are great, almost all of the grip of MPSC and Corsa's but they also work in wet conditions as well. Sourcing them is a bit of a problem but I know Dunlop have a new version out.

Try calling Mr Tyre in Birmingham for details.

Cheers

I have theToyo;s and so far have done one track day ( recent PCGB Castle Coombe, wet and dry) and been very impressed. I also run SO2's on the road and by comparison Toyo's have so much more grip. They even seemed ok in the wet compared with the SO2's.

I cannot offer any comparison with other track tyres but they seem ok to me, although they were very noisy on the drive home as the rears make the sound of a failed wheel bearing! Like you, SO2's for the road and I'll keep the Toyo;s for the track

I've got a budget solution for you. I have a full set of Colway Traxtars which I used on my old 3.2 for about two trackdays before I sold it. They are 205/55/16 and 225/50/16 ie should be ideal for your D90s. They are re-treads, but are proper speed rated, soft compound track tyres based on quality Pirelli carcasses. They have masses of tread left (brand new they had 10mm + tread which is far too much for a track tyre). They are no use to me and are gathering dust cluttering up my parents' barn. You can have the lot for £75. Even if you decide they're crap on track (definitely not quite in MSPC or Corsa territory, but significantly better than standard road tyres in my experience), then you've not ventured much ! Let me know......

Cheers Jamie - they sound perfect!

How old are they out of curiosity?

Give me a call on my mobile (07795 291 739)and I'll sort out collection etc.

What a great forum this.

Kristian,
They are about 18 months old and since coming off the car have been stored warm and dry in my parents' barn. They did one day at Spa and one or maybe two others before I sold the car. Overall they're in pretty good nick with the odd cobweb ! They have absolutely masses of tread and their performance will actually improve as they wear down a bit more and the tread blocks squirm less. I ended up using them as road tyres for a while in an effort to wear them down a bit and they performed very well there too, with the tread offering plenty of wet grip.
