TRACKDAY BRAKE CONTAMINATION

Hi

I have just returned from a trackday and found several holes in the front discs full of a solid substance presumably composed of rubber and brake dust! I have tried a low pressure hose plus a small bradawl but cannot remove it.

Does any one have any tips on removing this and does it affect brake performance.

Thanks

(Never happened on my 996 C4S!!!)

I would have thought a Bradawl should have moved or pushed the debris through. I'm sure it just needs a little more force.

Thanks but I used a soft faced mallet on the bradawl. I am loath to give it a hard wack in case it slips especially if there is a special solvent available!

Still can't clear the holes, will have to wait till I get the wheels off and can apply serious manual force. I need something to hold the drill bit with as well so far burnt holes in my hand!

I had this problem.

You need a drill - nothing less will shift it and the drill bits will often break as it is so tough.

Sorry to raise an old topic, but try a 2.5mm wood screw ?

If done after each track day the screw will press through the holes clearing the dust and if it does get stuck, it can simply be unscrewed

'No need to take a power tool anywhere near your sparklies !!!

Thanks, I will try almost anything now as I have had no real success. Next track day is 2nd August and I will spend the next day at it!

Be aware that not all the holes are drilled , some near the outer edge are just dimpled . I cleared mine using good quality 4mm drill bit using high speed setting and low feed rate , with the clutch on the drill set to a light setting .

Going to do my best Gromit impression with the portable electric drill.....

Thanks Paul,

I'll guess that a wood screw wouldn't make much of an impression on solid steel, but there certainly shouldn't be any brake dust in there.

Would the drill add extra holes ???

Well I think that you have solved my problem!!!

The only holes I haven't been able to clear are at the edge. I really had no idea that these were only dimpled! No wonder I couldn't get the muck out, I was probably just compacting it, perhaps a solvent like wheel cleaner will clean the dimples up.
