Tracker - Draining Battery

Sean

New member
A friend of mine took delviery of a new 997 a few months back. The car was sitting for a week and the battery was flat. After contacting the OPC they said that this was a common problem ...as the tracker drains the battery.

I think this is rubbish! A tracker couldn't drain the battery that much in 7 days.

Anyone encounter the same problem?

I think it is more common in cars with tracker in combination with having a small battery. You only get the 197 (option number) Higher amperage battery if you select the Porsche Sound Package Plus or the Bose system and possibly Auto Climate Control(?)... I am surprise the OPC did not take the opportunity to state that that is why Porsche has come up with their own security system i.e. VTS.

Yes, i had exactly the same problem, with an M3 i had in 1995. It was a nightmare, because it manifested itself by setting the alram off. IE. when the battery ran down, the car thought somone was tyring to steal it. So initially, we thought it was the alarm at fault. But it turned out the tacker was indeed draining the battery.

I have just talked to Tracker about this problem. They state that the Tracker Horizon unit for example drains the car battery at the rate of 15mA.
So with a 45A/hr car battery it would take the tracker unit 3000 hours or 125 days to completely flatten it!
In my previouse experience of Porsches without tracker devices fitted they still suffer from flat batteries within very short periods e.g. 3 or 4 weeks. In this case however it is unreasonable for a battery to go flat in just 1 week! How are you supposed to park at an airport for example and go on holiday for two weeks? As for the OPC's comments, go back and quote the figures above and see what their next idea is.

Model year 2007 997 includes VTS as standard.

Kind regards,
Simon

Do you have the full spec for 2007 model year ?

The VTS was a £1,200 option, so how much has the base price increased by, to include this as standard ?

Yes me, I have to keep my Accumate trickle charger on if I leave the car for any more than 4 or 5 days. Luckily the first time it went completely flat the Accumate managed to recover it!

I have the Bose etc so assume the larger battery?

The longest Ive left mine without starting it was about a fortnight over winter when it was zero degrees c most days.

Sparked up on the first twist of the key come playtime though.

My car was left for 3 weeks over the summer with no ill effects on the battery.

Tracker Horizon on my car.

Thanks for the comments...i'll pass them on and get a better spec of the tracker.

Tx again,
Sean

Sean, I've been through about 3 batteries under warranty, you shouldn't have to, but the bottom line is it is a lot less hassle to simply pay about £40 for a Porsche trickle charger, it does the trick & is easy to use (plugs into fag lighter!!) providing your car is garaged!

Brief update..

The car is currently on a trickle charger whilst gargaged. But the car has been dead twice after returning to it in the airport.

Currently chasing OPC for a solution.....[8|]
