Tracker on new Caymen

I think you'll find only Porsche insurance will cover you without a tracker at this value but that's ok as they are competitive and it's good cover Inc two free days trackday cover Porsche vts is about £1100 iirc plus £200/year

Thank you very much I will get a price from Porsche. I am very excited now I have ordered the car and can not wait for it to arrive so expect the next couple of months will seem to last forever.

The Cayman comes with a factory alarm. Personally I wouldn't let ANY third party fiddle with the electrics on a car like this, so I resolutely refused to have a tracker fitted. This ended up with me changing my insuranc company, I suggest you do the same. []

Hi, I have just ordered by first Caymen and checked with my insurance company and they are asking for a tracker and alarm. I haven't yet spoken to the garage but does anyone know if I need both as the Caymen brochure is offering on the Caymen not the 'S' module, a tracker fitted by the garage only not as a factory fitting. Does anyone know if I need both and how much they cost upfront and pa. Any advice is very welcome.

I totally agree with the comments made above. Some companies will cover even high value sports cars without a tracker. May be worth trying someone like Admiral ? I take the view that I wouldnt want the car back if it has been stolen (I guess it would also then appear on the register as a stolen/recovered vehicle which massively reduces it's value). Better to pay a slightly higher premium rather than pay the cost of a tracker I would say, but just my personal view.

I was with Direct Line, had been for years but we fell out over the stupid tracker. I moved to Saga, and got a cheaper deal anyway. I am now with Admiral (multi car policy) and no mention of trackers. Over the last 20 years or so, the only significant problems I have had with cars have been due to third part alarms and immobilisers. These may be OK when first fitted, but stuff fitted with Scotchlok connectors have no place on a modern car, and as the years go by they get increasingly unreliable. I have had immobilisers removed from a 924, a 964 and recently my MX5. Worse still the Cayman is a CAN bus and fibre optic system, and the thought of letting some back street Herbert with a set of pliers and roll of insulating tape loose on it does not bear thinking about! [] ... and of course, I suspect the insurance companies own the tracker companies! []

Moreover (you can tell I'm on my soapbox) [:D] ... If your car is taken by muppets for joy riding, you hardly want it back after it has been trashed. If your car is targetted by professional thieves, the tracker is as good as useless. The first thing they do is drive it into a waiting metal container and shut the door, instant Faraday cage, and tracker useless. The car will be shipped off to Russia before the Police have finished their doughnuts!

Thanks everyone for your views and I will now look at a different insurance company other than LV. The Porsche garage where going to fit the tracker but I still think what you are saying about its value, do I want the car back if stolen and what trouble I am going to have with the tracker in general is all very valid points to be considered. This is what forums like this are for, true enthusiasts offering genuine advice. Thanks again.

Thanks Diane, glad we were of help, may we respectfully suggest: http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=302619&mpage=1&key=&#302619

Indeed, to quote your own earlier post "RBS Group owns; Tracker, Privilege, Direct Line, Churchill, Green Flag................. " Serious conflict of interest here [][]

My Cayman has Porsche VTS fitted but I don't want the hassle (goes off when you are on the car ferry etc.) or the £250 pa cost. Fortunately I got a good quote on insurance from Elephant (same as Admiral I think) with no need to activate the tracker. I keep my car on the street as well.

Hi Diggit, Been away on vacation, so only catching up on the forum now. Cant see it mentioned before, but am quite sure if you fit any tracker other than Porsche VTS you will invalidate your warranty. Porsche insurance is run by Aviva, who will insure up to £50K without a tracker. If not try Performance Ins..they advertise in the club mag..Porsche Post...page 143 in June issue, I've used them over the last couple of years.

I had the same issue when swapping my Touareg for a Cayman. I found a Thatcham approved portable tracker from mtrack (you'll need to google it). No wiring, knocked plenty off insurance and I can move it from car to car at no cost.

Thanks everyone, the car is due in the next few weeks so I will now take all your comments on board when finalising my insurance. Can I ask one more question, there seems to be some ambiguity about whether the Cayman (not the Cayman S) has an alarm fitted, the price list brochures says yes, but then again it also says it has a tracker as standard, the car brochure says no and my sale person is telling me yes. What a headache, does anyone have the standard Cayman and did it come with a factory fitted alarm or did you need to get one fitted.

Hi, Got confirmation from Porsche GB that there is an alarm, and its a Thatcham 1. They apologised for the documentation being wrong and have informed their marketing department in the UK of the errors in their brochures and price list Diane
