Tracker or no tracker? Insurance...

Hi Guys,
I am renewing my insurance and am getting wildly different quotes for my 04 'S'.

Some are over £1600 the average seems to be about £1150 []

I have recently had an 01 'S' with a tracker fitted but not subscribed to (didnt need for insurance) and a Lotus Elise with no tracker either and these were much cheaper........

How many of you have trackers fitted? Am I in the minority without one?

Some insurers will not quote me without one which is rather frustrating considering I have never needed one before.

My renewal is with Chris Knott: £899, 29yo, 9yrs NCD no accidents etc, with no tracker. Is this good?
It seems to be the cheapest one around but i am open to suggestions!

I have tried Confused, Elephant, Footman James, A plan, Performance Marque, Lancaster, Tesco.

Thanks

Rick

I just renewed my 04 S with Liverpool Victoria, (www.lv.com) for less than £600. 40yr old, 9yrs NCD. I have a tracker but they didn't ask about it.

I too have just renewed my insurance with SAGA for £532, no mention of having to have a tracker.

If you are not an old bastard like me, try AA Insurance. They quoted a similar amount.

Have you tried www.confused.com ?

I went with Sainsbury's car insurance, no tracker needed and reasonable prices (well for an old woman [:(] with 9 yrs NCD!, not garaged, not a great postcode area either and currently no points - and aiming to keep it that way [:D] !!).

I'm insured through Porsche, and they don't specify a Tracker. When asked how much reduction I would get if I fitted a Porsche VTS at £1,000 + subscription.........they told me £50!!!!
You can guess what I did! [:'(]

When Insurance shopping consider that many of the cheaper places DO NOT cover accessories .. even Factory fitted ones ... .. So write off well spec'd car .. get back money for a standard one with no extras.......

Renewed end of June, was with Privilege - they insisted on a tracker to cover for theft - however would insure without tracker but if stolen then no cover, tracker was already fitted and i renewed another year from when i purchased the car in March as i still had three months cover with Privilege - Privilege was £483 fully comp £800 excess, full no claims, Leicester suburbs, age 51, changed to More Than, no tracker needed, free roadside recovery, £250 excess =£520 - So i still save next year because i wont renew tracker which this year was £150

I also have a tracker fitted, but chose not to subscribe. The difference in the insurance was £ 60 per annum, so not really worth the £125 subs.

I had a £400 quote from Direct Line, but went with a £660 from A-Plan as Direct Line will use their own repairers etc, not Porsche or approved repairers should the worst happen. Swiftcover came up with a £564 quote, also not Porsche approved.

edit** Main comments are on the tracker really, as we are not directly comparing apples with apples here - I am aware I am in the wrong forum :p

I question the value of tracker devices these days..... hard-pressed police etc.Have known cases where the boys in blue have not reacted as you would expect.
Seems from your comments that many insurers feel the same way.

Surely any professional thieves out there will just - steal the car, park under a concrete bridge (or anywhere else with no phone signal) remove the tracking device and load onto container.

Thanks guys, I guess from my phone calls, and your responses that being 29 is not on my side....[:(] despite having had several high performance cars before.

I am going to try a few more of your suggestions but it doesnt seem a sensible option to pay for a tracker, though i think it would allow more companies to quote me.

worth checking the cover for factory extras though....... hadnt thought of that, presumed it would be covered like for like

899 quid to beat......... wish me luck!

I have the Porsche System fitted (its actually cobra) .. The system works great as the few times I have triggered it I have had an SMS within 30 seconds of driving off and a call within 2 mins telling me the car is moving .. In talking to them about how it works, they can give you the location of the vehicle straight away and its direction / speed

exactly my experience graeme ,when er indoors has taken it to get a takeaway and forgotten the little black box!!

I used the AA for my insurance and it came to around £400 as Direct Line refused to insure it unless it had a tracker... (I am 39 though!)

am too young for AA.....[]

29 and still being told i am not old enough for things!!

My renewal has been brilliant, it includes my 26yo GF and she had a malicious damage claim this year on her car and my new car is more expensive, my premium has gone up only 48 quid!

(FYI 849 quid incl legal, windscreen, courtesy car, protected, no tracker)

Give Chris Knott a try everyone, i am well pleased [:D] (number in post above)

you are nearly twice the age of the youngest member of the cayman club[:D][:D][:D]-in usa -his parents bought him a new cayman s for his 16th bithday!!!dont know what his insurance bill is!!!

If my beloved Porsche was stolen I wouldnt want it back, knowing it would have beed driven so so badly.... So a tracker would make it eaiser to find......So No No No !

Most modern Porsche's are stolen for "export" not a joy ride, so probabaly get driven a lot gentler than say we would do to our own car on a track day [;)]
