Tracker or not

Pick up my new (well March 2005, actually) 9972S tomorrow, but having switched the insurance over from my 996, I note my cover excludes theft until I supply proof of a tracker. How will I know if it has one? Are they standard or an option. Anyone got experience of a retrofit - or should I just switch insurance companies?
Any help welcome.

Firstly, I hope the car is a 2005! Check the VIN and look at the service booklet to make sure it was delivered in 2005 (page 4 of the service booklet).
Then call Tracker to see if it's fitted on your car. Their number is 0500 090 909.

Good luck and enjoy what is a fantastic car.

Hi Jon,

Great choice of car ;)

The standard (current) Porsche approved tracking system is called VTS and it's produced by Cobra.
However I believe it is very expensive to retro fit so you'd be better off checking what level your insurer requires.
If it helps I had a Cobra TrakQ system fitted to mine by a company called Driven (who were fantastic to deal with)

I also looked at the Tracker Horizon package as this met my insurance companies requirements.

Well worth the peace of mind in my opinion.

Enjoy!

jon, the VIN will read something like this WPOZZZ99Z5S...............
The number after the fourth Z (in this example it is a 5) states the model year of the car. It could be a 4 since the 2005 model year came out in October 2004. Beleive me it's worth checking, I'm in the middle of a legal battle over this which has cost me thousands and will probaly cost me thousands more!

yippee!!!!!!!!! it's WPOZZZ99Z5S------ (got the Porsche warranty through today)
Thanks for your help and some peace of mind. By the way, this car has 8k on the clock, and I'm like a little boy on Christmas eve.

Welcome to the 997 side of things Jon. [:)]

I hope your enjoyment lasts longer than hg's , who I hope can explain the woes he seems to be going through []
I assume you were miss sold a car ???

Jon,
If you go down the route of getting a tracking device fitted, then I'd recommend Cobra or TrackStar (from RAC). My experience of the company called "Tracker" has been administrative incompetence - something I'm not prepared to live with just in case they are called upon in an emergency.

Your dealer should be aware of the Tracker if fitted and hand over the certificate and the associated paperwork. You then need to send off the original for amendment - I seem to remember the photocopy was sufficient to be used as a temporary entitlement of cover.
There are a number of companies offering Trackers and you need to liase with your insurance over what level they are exspecting if indeed it does require new fitment but how did the previous owner get cover without it??

cobra will certainly know if its a vts system
they are very efficient in my experience-my wife recently went for a takeaway when i was doing a hospital clinic (and taken her car) and cobra both texted and phoned me within 5 minutes of the car being moved without the necessary device that goes with it!!(at home in my desk!!)
very reassuring if you have the porsche vts fitted.no experience of others as didnt need to callthem

I had Tracker fitted in my previous 996 fitted by the OPC, whilst the paperwork for me was always OK (I have read a few have had issues) the system used to false trigger on a regular basis.
It was returned to the OPC to be checked out twice, once by the OPC and once by Tracker.. they both blamed each other and it never got sorted..

This is the one thing that I feel a little happier with on the VTS.... I only need to fire the one bullet....[;)]

I can elaborate m4tcc!
I bought a 2005 C4S which turned out to be a 2003 car, imported from Cyprus. The long and short of it is that it was mis-sold to me. Amongst other things it hadn't been HPI'd by the dealer, had more previous owners than advertised, more miles on the clock, an incomplete service history and no warranty.

I shall put a message out shortly too about imported cars. Mine came from Cyprus although the dealer never told me of this. It turns out that it is not insured for theft as a result. All UK spec cars, not just Porsches, come with a Thatcham Cat1 alarm/immobiliser system for about the last 10 years. As mine doesn't have one, despite having a Tracker Monitor fitted, my insurers, Norwich Union, won't pay out if it's stolen. My broker said that some insurers also do not cover such cars at all.

So to anyone who has anything other than a UK c16 spec car, check your insurance!!!

Hi Jon and congrats on the 997.

Be careful what you read here. Tracker was NEVER standard on a 997. Porsche VTS is standard from 2007 model year, which would mean a car built from September 2006. In terms of chassis numbers, WPOZZZ99Z then 5 or 6 or 7 etc denotes the model year, regardless of when it was registered.

If your car had a Tracker as Andy comments you would have had a black folder from Tracker with some hand-over paperwork to do and point of collection from the dealer. You don't seem to have had this, so I would guess you haven't got anything.

Whilst we're sympathetic to hg.., he actually has a 996 and not a 997.

Thanks, all, for the advice. Now had the Tracker Monitor fitted, so fingers crossed! Love the car. Very different from the 996..... (which I also loved, by the way)
regards
Jon

hg, I'm sure I remember reading about a similar situation, not sure if it was your story or not ??

I read Robs message to be clarification not a comment about your car being a 996, I didn't realise that- however it doesn't really have a bearing on the matter.....
Something else to be considered when buying an import, certainly something not alot of people may have realised without you raising the point.

I wish you all the luck in getting it sorted
