Tracker?

Hi Everyone,

I am about to take delivery of a long (5 months) awaited Boxster 2.7 and find that I have to get a tracker fitted to get insurance against theft.

I don' t really care if it works, and just want the cheapest option that covers me. I don' t want a second remote control unit. I also have some misgivings about an unqualified technician setting about my new interior with an untrained screwdriver.

Anyone got any advice or comfort for me?

Pat

Hi Pat, Have no fears concerning having the Tracker fitted, for two reasons. First I don' t think there is an insurance company who will cover the car without it being fitted. The second is that it does give you confidence that should the vehicle be stolen it should be located and returned before any damage is done. I had one fitted to my MY2002 model 2.7 Boxster by my OPC who did a grand job. I don' t know where it is, even the salesman doesn' t know where it is situated! Just don' t ever move the car without having the ignition key in it' s place or you will have ' the Bill' around in no time flat. Here' s wishing you many happy miles in your car, I bought mine as a 70th birthday present to myself, it' s been a great joy, and I an told I am going through the menoPorsche!! [:)][:)]

I agree. I had mine fitted by an ICE type specialist, who also do things like creating new dashboards to match the existing one in a new Ferrari - they are that good.

They don' t tell you where it is fitted, which is good. Also, my garage deals with them, so any ' problems' can be easily dealt with.

I had the car breakdown in Marseille a few years back, and it got shipped back to Blighty by the nice AA man. As soon as it arrived on these shores, I got a ' phone call from Tracker, asking if my car had been stolen - car being moved, no key in ignition.

First I don' t think there is an insurance company who will cover the car without it being fitted.

Royal Sun Alliance do not require it. Various Porsche Insurance specialists offer cover throough them.

I' m not saying it' s a bad idea though!

Axa insurance tried to charge me at first for the Tracker; saying it was a modification!!!!!! Finally spoke to an operator with a brain and got a £60 discount[:)]

Never a problem with any quotes I sourced, as long as immobiliser and alarm were fitted, they were happy, trackers were never mentioned. Whilst I also agree they are a good idea, the insurance boys are getting a bit carried away I feel. My Mitsubishi was broken into in my drive last week they actually tried to nick it by smashing off the ignition, what stopped them was the immobiliser, nuff said!!!

Churchill don' t require a tracker to be fitted either.

I think there are two subscription options on the tracker. The cheaper one is where you call the tracker company if your car is stolen, and they locate and return it for you. The dearer option is they contact you if your car is moved without the ignition turned on.

Hope this helps

Thanks All,

I have been a bit premature as the blimin car has still not arived yet - Despite an original " Build Date" of May!

For me insurance without tracker is £950, and with one is £600, so it doesn' t take long to pay for itself.

I can get RAC trackstar fitted by someone I trust, but it is £600 plus a subsciption, and seems to come with a second remote control, which I know I will lose, or forget to use on the occaision the car gets nicked.

Tracker Monitor which has no need of a second remote is £500 plus £99 a year plus fitting - which if the dealer does it costs £70 an hour and probably delays my delivery date even further.

If I buy it through the insurer I get the Tracker Monitor for £300, but it is fitted at home by a non-Porsche trained technician. Hence my concern about my trim being attacked by a clumsy screwdriver.

I know the saving is small potatoes compared to the cost of the vehicle. But I begrudge paying top dollar for something I don' t want, and seems to benefit the Insurer not me.

I just wondered if anyone had a better idea - or knew that fitting these things is less of a violation to the vehicle than I suspect1

pat,i had tracker fitted by the pre delivery it didn' t hold up delivery at all,

that was 3 years ago. six months ago i had to get the tracker serviced £80,they send chap round to your house/place of work. it was then that i discovered that it happened to be the same chap that the had fitted it to my car in the first place!! my opc just get tracker in to do it for them!!! so i could have saved myself the money!!!!

by the way i' ve never(famous last words)had any trouble with rattles or loose trim.

Just to add to the list of insurer' s, Elephant.co.uk also didn' t require a tracker to be fitted to my car, on the proviso that the car is garaged overnight when at it' s normal address.
A friend of mine with an XKR has an interesting theory on trackers - along the lines of " do you really want to get your car back after it' s been thrashed, crashed, stripped out or whatever - or would you rather have a replacement via your insurance" - as long as they pay up to the full value of course!.
NB: I guess where you live within the UK also has an effect on the insurers requirements for trackers

regards

Thanks again.

I am sometimes lazy and don' t garage my car every night. So to be on the safe side I specify driveway on my insurance propsal. Perhaps that affects my premium quotations.

I must have rung every insurance company on this planet when I recently bought my Boxster and found that Churchill didn' t require a tracker to be fitted, or give any futher discounts if the car is garaged over night as opposed to parked on a private driveway. I am like you .... and sometimes get a bit lazy and don' t garage the car. But with Churchill it didn' t make any difference on the premium so I have just told them that the car is parked on the drive ...... just incase I forget to garage it. They still turned out to be cheaper then every other company I rang!

Tesco' s said they would not cover me without a Tracker. When I bought the car the owner did not tell me it had one already. So I booked the instalation of a Tracker Monitor for £230 to be fitted by a local Car Audio Specialist in N. London. They called me to tell me I already had one! That makes a mockery of the fact that no-one is supposed to know where it is fitted, so that thieves cannot remove it! Installers obviously become lazy and probably all fit them in the same place.

E-Sure (Halifax) didn' t insist on a tracker and were happy to accept the standard alarm immobiliser combo as adequate security. They also REDUCED my premuim this year to £452 (fully comp 9500 miles a year). Unfortunately this went up by £50 when I told them that my wife was done for speeding last month. Bizzarely, the premium on the 9 month old Boxster S is less than we paid for our 12 year old 944 S2!

Used to have a tracker in my Audi S3 - it was fitted before I bought the car - but I didn' t bother transferring the ownership to my name. I thought it was expensive and as the insurance company didn' t insist I had one it seemed a bit of a waste of money. Besides, I wouldn' t particularly want a car back after it had been stolen.
