Tracking Devices

Hi
I seek advice from anyone who has fitted a Tracker to their 993. Some systems will inevitably be better than others, similarly installers. I will install a system covering Europe and UK. Have there been any conflicts with the immobiliser/alarm system? Thanks in advance.

I got one fitted by GAP Security in my old 993... it was an RAC Trackstar IIRC. Broke down after 2 years, after the battery went it never worked properly, I was getting towed one day and realised it was all locked up and armed and phoned up to tell the RAC to ignore it and it hadn't alerted them.

Sometime later I lifted up the carpet in the passenger seat and there was the unit, not well hidden at all.

So, avoid RAC and avoid GAP.

Your local OPC should be able to install or a good Indie advise on an installer.

I can recommend a guy that fitted one on a friends car, took him ages to dismantle the car to put it in an inaccessible place, once fitted you could not tell it was there, very good job, think it was about £600 fitted though, it took about 5 hours to fit, so very good money in my eyes

I have Tracker fitted. It was in the car when I bought it.You have to get it checked by Tracker every so many years. They either come to you or you go to them. They test it and replace any items, such as back up battery. On mine the battery had failed and was replaced. It was interesting as they had to locate the device and their records of original fitment seemed a little vague.Nevertheless it was found and the battery replaced.Took a bit of time and dismantling though.

Last month we had a presentation at our Regional meeting (R10) by a guy from i-mob. Their unit is certainly not the cheapest but is very impressive in that it's armed via text message from your mobile phone and will alert you within 7-10 seconds if started whilst armed. It will also text you the geographic location of your car from anywhere in the World (assuming it has mobile phone coverage!!). I have no affiliation with them but their web site is at www.i-mob.co.uk.

had a mate with a M5 and the i-mob fitted, came in very handy when his car went into a service, he tracked it, speed etc and asked the dealer, who stated it had not been out, I think he did well from the whole service and all.

He was aware all was not well as he had it set to alert him when it went above x mph, and the boys at the dealership tripped it, would of loved to see the service managers face trying to explain how it had done x mph in the workshop.

Hello,

You have to pay extra.I think it is round £80.
I have lifetime tracker which means I do not pay an annual sub.If you are going to keep the car it is probably the better bet.

How much is Lifetime tracker? I've got tracker on my '97 993 and it was fitted from new. but I think the £125 annual is a bit of a rip off.

£350 apparently. So you need to plan to keep your car at least three years to make it worthwhile. I don't think you can transfer an active Tracker - they refer to it as "for the duration of ownership".

I had trackstar on my Subaru, worked perfectly
i.e it reduced the insurance premiums but failed to locate the car when it was stolen so that it never came back.

I have a Tracker and I would NOT recommend it. I'm now fairly sure it does not work (just been on two ferry rides and I deliberately did not call them just to get some sign of life from it (or them) and ... no call came in).

So I'm looking at splashing out on an i-mob before my subscription is up.
