Two years ago I looked at a '94 993 C2 cab with 59 k on the clock. It looked and drove very well. Unfortunately, although the owner had the service book (duly stamped) he had lost virtually all invoices detailing work carried out including old MOT's. Additionally, following an HPI check the car showed a mileage discrepancy and finance alert. To cut a long story short, the mileage discrepancy was a mistake and the finance issue related to a previous number plate.
The car had 5 owners and five different number plates. I contacted the independent who carried out work for the current owner, and obtained invoice copies without a problem. The car felt right, was local, and the right price, so I took the plunge and the car has turned out to be spot on.
None the less, at the time I was still bothered by the initial HPI report even though the issues had been cleared. I was also concerned about the lack of firm history.
So....... for £5 (yes five pounds) you can request all history of the car from DVLA. All you need is good reason for doing so, and in my case I simply explained that I wanted to build a more comprehensive history of the car. Four weeks later I recieved 20 A4 sheets of paper detailing the cars origin, all numbers, colour, date of reg etc., all previous owners names and addresses, dates of ownership change, details of number plate changes and what those plates were, mileage verification and so on. It must have taken someone ages, and some of the info was micro film.
This is a great addition to any service history, the address is: Fee Paying Enquiries, DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AJ
