Tracking System

Hi,
My 1995 993 is fitted with Clifford alarm/immobilser, presumably by Porsche UK at time of importation. I wish to instal a tracking system for piece of mind when touring in Europe. My local electronics people recommend Cobra which covers Europe. I am uncertain about the wisdom of mixing security systems. Maybe it does not matter. Any advice and experience welcome as usual.
Richard.

Greetings
No it doesn't matter. One is an alarm system, which purely detects intrusion via pin switches and microwave disturbance, etc.
While the other is based on G.P.S. location.... (I hope)! Both systems require a battery feed and an ignition sense connection. Then so does the stereo, the cig lighter, the engine, etc etc. In other words, they are two different jobs.
So don't worry. Fit as many security devices as you like.
Picture of the mother-in-law on the dash works best for me[:D]

As per the previous reply - the tracking system - whichever you go for - will be independant of the alarm. It will however take a feed from the imobiliser; it's through this the system knows whether the car is being moved with consent or not.

I have, personally, had enough of Tracker as a company - their policy is you CANNOT move the tracker between vehicles, so your investment is wasted when you buy another car.

I've now started fitting RAC Trackstars which have the ability to move between vehicles when you change, can be paid for on direct debit rather than one lump sum, and provide European cover.

pmjt... What's the damage (£) for Trackstar, then? Sounds interesting.

Can't remember the cost - I'll dig out the last invoice over the weekend.

As far as I remember, in the UK Trackstar works like Tracker etc - if stolen, the UK Police will actively look for the car and are advised directly by the Trackstar control centre.

In Europe, the difference is the car isn't monitored - you have to advise the control centre and then Trackstar provide you / the local police with the location of the car.

Trackstar is GPS and GSM based but they don't have the direct relationships with each country's police force.

I'll try and dig out the price for you....

Ola,

Had RAC Trackster fitted approx two weeks ago £299 then £10 a month or £120 for year. You can pay a £395 ish fee for "lifetime cover". I booked mine through Driven In Car (look on net for contact details) excellent service.

Hope helps

Chris

Buy a cheap pay-as-you-go mobile phone and register it with one of those web sites where you can track the phone's location. Then hide it in your car, just remembering to charge the battery now and then. [:D]
