Tracking

I' ve just had two front tyres replaced on the Boxster. The chappie at the tyre center suggested I should have the wheels tracking checked, and perhap a geometric tracking check.

How do I know if the car needs re-tracking, and I am just not being conned into shelling out more cash?!

Well, I can only speak from experience in a 3.2, but as the tracking gets further out, then the handling does as well - the front just gets more and more vague. Having had the car since 1994, I am getting good at this ! Mind you, no power steering, so that might mask it.

Getting the alignment set to track day settings is easily worth the money. Check the details in the Boxster Register section of May' 03 edition of the Porsche Post magazine.

A very good indicator of the geometry is the wear on the used tyres. If they are evenly worn in all respects then there cannot be much wrong unless you have given it a recent jolt or two.

Front two tyres were very worn on the inside. The rear tyres are new so don' t know what the wear is like on them. Thanks for your help folks. Much appreciated.

Helen - Unless your eyes are like the Terminator' s, with little grids on the back of your retinas and about 6 ft apart the answer is no. Unfortunately the good old pot-hole is how things get a bit out of line in the first place.....

Your best bet is to go back to the place you had the tracking carried out and get them to re-check the alignment. If it is ok and you flash them a quick look at a lusted-after part of your bodykit they may charge you little or nothing (- its the adjustment that takes the time).

If it is out then, well you have no choice but to sort it in any event....

Personally, I wouldn't trust any of the high street tyre merchants with a Porsche. Go to your OPC or good independent.

OPCs have specialised 4-wheel geometry equipment to set it up within factory recommended tolerances.

If you want a bespoke set up, for track or specific characteristics, then you would need to go to a Porsche chassis tuning specialist.
