Tramlining...... (whispermode) it's gone

We've had our S2 for 15+ months now, and (whilst delighted with it in general) the tramlining has always been an issue for me. It's never felt quite right at the pointy end. [:'(]

Constantly pulled emphatically at cambers, and crossing the crown of a road at, say 100 or more units of velocity had you moving at least a foot off your intended line. Not ideal and it dominated over the steering feedback that I wanted. Annoying, as once settled into a bend and leaning on the suspension, the grip and feel were definately there.

One of the first things I did was take it to the specialist for alignment. Front was out for both camber and castor. Once corrected, it felt better. But it wasn't gone.

Stuck some 968 castor mounts on pretty soon after that. Another big step improvement. But it wasn't gone.

Stuck four new shocks on. Body control MUCH improved. But it didn't affect the tramlining of course (wasn't intended to!). Front shock change meant Geometry set-up again (which at least proved that I can set camber to spec by eye alone..... [8D] )

I've felt it was getting worse again recently, so I've been pricing front wishbone bushes, steering rod, balljoints etc etc...... I will track the culprit down []

Decided the other day that it was time for new front tyres. The Yokohama AVS on the front still had 4+ mm tread, but the rubber was cracking in between the tread. Quick check of the history revealed they were stuck on 21K miles ago...... in March 2000 (!).

Got 2 Toyo T1-Rs from Camskill (see other thread) to (kinda) match the Toyo T1-S I put on the rear of the car when I got it. Lovely, and superb service from Camskill.

Within 100metres of fitting I knew the car felt entirely different. Tramlining muich reduced. Make that MUCH reduced. Like...... banished!

Still nervous about tempting fate, but whilst the tyres are still bedding in they now have 80+ miles of so on them and they still feel superb (from a tramlining perspective - haven't really pushed them yet). I even went a run to some badly cambered sections of road that have always previously allowed me to excercise my arms, and .......nothing. Nada.

I have to say it's unbelieveable, because I still don't. Such a hooooge marked difference ~ would never have thought the old yokos could have been having such a negative influence.

Anyway - I am currently as [:D] as a Boar in excrement.

[:D] [:D]WOOO, and indeed HOOO! [:D] [:D]
VIVA LA S2! [8|]
