May I add that the transmission whine definitely does not prevent the cars from performing as they were designed for, far from it, as everybody here I suppose will have noticed []

The time to worry is when you start talking back!!! []ORIGINAL: Roger Mills
I must be lucky, mine is very quiet []
Until you let the clutch out in neautral and the release bearing starts to talk to me []

Normally only start to whine when car has done starship mileage, 200k plus.
I think you have been lucky!
200K conflicts with what Porsche say (see post further up the thread).
I'm pretty sure of both of my 944's milages, and both of those whined (I rather liked it - at 140 on the Autobahn it sounded like a jet taking off !)

It has more to do with the 'how many miles has your car done thread'.
The reality is the majority of 944's are clocked and clocked again, as much by private owners as the trade.
The cars themselves are built as you know like the proverbial brick s**t house so they encourage such action. Sadly the gearboxes do show wear hence all these 95k 944's with noisy axles, when in truth they are 200k plus cars.
The delusion of owners of these cars is remarkable, if my 944 whined I would not be happy unless I had paid the cost of a rebuild less for the car.
Sum up, if they whine they are worn and really should be fixed.

I have owned and my family admittedly extended, eight 944's over the last 14 years.
Funnily the cars I looked at in the late eighties had all done big mileages then 100k plus - why they were cheaper hence my interest. Those same cars nearly a decade and half on all seem to have been stationary or have actually gone backwards! Perhaps that explains why the gearboxes whine??

As a consequence service histories were forged and trust me plenty were, mostly be the trade.
Slightly more difficult now and less incentive to do so cash wise so my experience is private sellers are at least as bad at simply clocking the car and inventing a storyas to where the book went. Stolen is a favourite!
I also reckon turbo cars were generally less used, more 2/3rd car than lux and S2.
Turn the radio up!!
Good tip Geoff, as helpful as ever. I've found that this works well with many car problems.
On a similar line, if you experience low oil pressure put tape over the guage
