Hi Jim, not sure if this is much help to you but i have my 88 944s g-box on the bench at the moment, she has done 92k i have mesured the in and out movement and its around 1mm both sides, let me know how you get on mate.........
New old box fitted today. Did the job on my driveway, took me about 6 hours in total. Getting the new box in on your own with only a trolley jack is difficult, I had to go to the local builders yard and get some wooden blocks to pack the front and rear of the box with the jack in the middle.
£75 for the box, £20 for oil, £5 for 2 oil seals and a fiver for some wood !
Car drives great with smooth changes and no whining so I guess I got lucky with S/H box. I am now a very happy bunny !

Interestingly, I asked several local garages how much they would charge for the G/box swap, some wanted an open ended "it costs what it costs" at £35 an hour, some said a day to a day and a half and my nearest Porsche specialist said 4-5 hours at £50 an hour. All this when you read on the web, that if you have the right equipment its a 2 hour job. A strong incentive to do it yourself !
Good luck, you will get a lot of satisfaction doing it yourself and you will know that the jobs been done right.

well done mate. This should give some of the rest of us more confidence to tackle some of the jobs on our cars. 2 hours is brilliant. it could take longer than that to fit an ICE system
Sorry to dissapoint Peanut, I didn't do it in 2 hours, I did it in about 6, but that was with no assistance. 2 hours is what the experts are supposed to be able to do it in with a ramp and a gearbox jack etc. I reckon I saved the best part of £200 by doing it myself, plus I actually enjoyed it and got some satisfaction.
