Transmission backlash

Hi all

My baby is currently in hospital at AFN Reading for its 12000 mile service (I have a new flappy-paddle Boxster as a loaner - great fun but somehow too 'easy').

One of the things I asked them to investigate was 'backlash' on a trailing throttle at low speed - say, 10 mph. A sort of kangarooing and clanking as you come gradually to a halt at the lights. Dropping to a lower gear and using the accelerator sort of drives-through this.

I don't think it's the Idle Stablizer Valve (ISV) as engine revs seem to be behaving themselves. AFN say they can't find anything wrong and have opted for 2x distributor caps and rotor arms (the ones in place at the moment are apparently showing signs of wear).

Has anyone got any thoughts - Clutch, CV/Universal Joint? Any help appreciated. A friend of mine thinks the suspension-lowering to RS spec may have exacerbated the problem.

Thanks Graham

Actually, it was your post that got me thinking she had a problem (you know how you gradually get used to problems and ignore them) but I don't get the problem at 'high' speed and the revs are behaving themselves, so suspect it's not the ISV.

Good ideas, all. Thanks.

AFN replaced the dizzies and rotors. I'd say the problem has gone and the car definitely now has more oomph.

Which got me thinking about 'upgrading' a 993 to electronic ignition.
