Transmission chatter

I have an '87 Carrera Sport (G50), 61K miles and the clutch changed at 40K. When moving off at low revs (clutch fully engaged) in any gear there is a brief transient chatter from the box or diff. Moving off at higher revs - nothing. The clutch appears OK, no judder or squeal and life left in the plates judging by feel and pedal travel.

Can anyone please say if this is a characteristic (I've been told G50's can be noisy) or more likely the start of someting tedious?

Fret not..."they all do that sir"...well, there is a rumour that the G50 noise is due to the drive being taken up with a little bit of torsional wind-up. a 1989 Club sport I drove once, had a very small hollow stabiliser bar connecting one part of the gearbox to another part. This was broken. When replaced by the main dealer the noise was much reduced.

Strangely - this part is not on my '88 car and seldom mentioned.

I too thought I had a similiar problem. I recently bought a very late "88" 3.2 and after a motorway drive home noticed "that noise" when driving round town. In a panic I took the car to the nearest Porsche dealer - Stratstone where a friendly mechanic offered to take a ride in the car. He also confirmed that gear chatter on the G50 is normal even when new from the factory. My car is a Non-Sport German import and also has the stabiliser bar fitted designed to reduce this noise - curred on the 964 with the dual mass flywheel. So don't worry. However, I still intend on changing the gear oil anyway.

Mine is very much worse when pulling low revs in 3--5th gear any suggestions as to the cause eg worn clutch etc.

I would Steve if I could post any pictures on here. I tried to upload one of my car but it failed. I think there's a size restriction on pics you can post. Any suggestions not being a computer pro myself????

Ant,
You need to view your photo in a Photo editing program, go to "file", "properties",
check the file size. To up-load, you are allowed 200k limit. If your photo is more than 200k, reduce the size or resolution of the photo, until under 200k.[8D]

Oh;- the gearbox problem could be due to rust, a car with 60k miles; thats about 4000 miles a year? Probably still running-in! (sorry- can't help my self - Take the P-ss)[;)]

If you e-mail it to me direct (details below) I will post it and then call you to explain how I did it using one of them new fangled on-line interactive 2 way voice contraptions (AKA the phone)
