transmission mounts

Can someone advise how many hours work there is to change the transmission mount(s) on a 944t if being done by a respectable/knowledgeable indy?

Is there anything else that should be done at the same time as preventative or 'while I'm there' type work?

3 max - I swapped the gearbox in one of mine in that, on my own, on the drive, so take a bit off for having a lift and proper kit, a bit more off for having experience and add a bit on for swapping the mount.

The OP asked the question about "while I'm in there..."


As the car is the later 91 250bhp turbo, I assume it has the LSD oil cooler loop.

On this assumption, as you have to remove this cooling loop to drop off the drive shafts IMHO I would:

Have the cooler inspected for leaks, have the seals replaced and ensure that the support bracket is in good order. They can shear off ( as mine did ) where it bolts up to the box / TT join.

I would also have the linkage examined thoroughly and ensure that they replace both the drain and fill plugs ( cheap from OPC).

It's probably worth ( if they haven't been done before) checking and replacing the Flexi fuel hoses around the fuel tank outlet and filter - they perish and the unions rust.

If there is time whilst up in the air / on ramp check all the brake pipes and the abs wiring looms especially the small very brittle brown earth wires.

Also worth inspecting / replacing the shift linkage. Very easy with the box out. (oh I see Chris got there first..)
 
Thanks for this guys, as I am too needing to replace the Transmission Mount. I've just bought the "Semi-Solid" mount from 911Design.

This is a first posting for me. Am I ever impressed.[:)]
 
If you use a ramp and a transmission jack then you can remove the Gearbox support bar,replace the mount and re-fit the bar in under an hour easily. if you remove a rear wheel you can pull the bar out through the gap.

That's how I did it too. The two bolts that connect the mount to the gearbox casing are a little tricky but once these are out you can lower the transmission sufficiently to slide the entire mounting bar out through the wheelarch. Very easy then to change the mount before sliding the bar back in. The two bolts into the gearbox need a bit of patience but not difficult.
 
can also make your own semi-solid mounts.. filled with urethane

I seem to recall them being expensive. £150ish rings a bell but i might be wrong. Best to call your preferred OPC and get a price from them.
