Transmission noises .............

So there I was, chuffed at finally getting my 924 running well (bought as a non-runner after minor fire), bags of oil pressure and no smoke or knocks and rattles from the engine. Freed the clutch off via the handy inspection plate under the bellhousing. The car had been standing for several years after the fire and clutch needed a gentle prod from underneath whilst pedal was held to the floor by carefully measured stick!
Sat in car, put in first gear, started to ease clutch up and ......... b****r ...... rumbling noise from front of torque tube area. Am 90% sure it is a torque tube bearing rather than gentle noises from clutch release bearing (car had a new clutch 10,000 miles earlier, according to service history) . Anyone care to comment on subtle differences in bearing noises? Could it possibly be 'just' the spigot bearing? - although it sounds far too loud for that to me. If it were either the clutch release or spigot then engine out is easiest as I have a decent engine crane. If it IS a torque tube bearing then it looks like transaxle out followed by torque tube. Not too worried if it is the second route as I am about to remove the entire rear suspension in order to increase ground clearance 3.5" by re-setting torsion bars and re-positioning the shock mounts that protrude down below the rear suspension arms.
So, any experiences/comments on varities of transmission noise from duff bearings?

Well, on my 1983 2.0 litre I have always had a backgound noise while driving, it goes away however if I just so much as rest my foot on the clutch pedal.

I believe 924 and 944 models often do this.

I don't think it is a 'problem' as such as mine has run for over 5 years like that, if it is cheap to fix I would probably get it done, but I somehow think it isn't [;)]

My 944 had a rumbling noise from either the box or torque tube when i bought it in 1995, its still doing it now and nothing has fallen off or blown up yet !! ps I posted your parts out today.
