Transmission squeek

My 87 Turbo has a squeek coming from the rear of the car, it seems to be around coupling of the torque tube to the gearbox. The noise is definately associated with the spinning of the drive shaft in the torque tube, it tails out in when you hit the clutch in neutral. My current thoughts are that it is a torque tube bearing or perhaps a bearing in the gearbox. I have been told that it is a common issue with the turbo and S2 models. I think I am going to take the back end of the car appart to replace the driveshaft boots and to get some bits shot blasted and re-painted so I might as well sort out the squeek while I am doing so.

Tom,

I knew there was a thread on this somewhere. There are others too if you can spare the time to search. I think it is the pinion bearing (seems to be the general consensus of opinion but seems to be a common thing that will happily rattle and squeak until the rest of the car around it has fallen apart. I never got an advisory for it from any specialist who worked on the car and it never got any worse during my ownership. I've certainly heard and read about it on other forums and from other owners. A bit annoying but you soon dial it out. I do recall hearing somewhere that someone had a full gearbox rebuild and torque tube bearings replaced and the noise re-appeared within a few thousand miles. Of course it is worth investigating further if you're going to do some work at the rear end, but it certainly doesn't warrant an expensive gearbox or torque tube rebuild.

Thanks for the link to the thread Scott, the one thing that strikes me is that I would never have decribed the noise as a rattle. Are you sure this is the same noise that this car produces? It does seems to occur under the same conditions and is associated with the gearbox end of the car.

Tom

There are many things that can make a transmission noisy, the noise you describe is usually the clutch release bearings but can also be the TT bearings. Before my clutch was changed a couple of months ago I had a noisy grating, rattle whilst in neutral, clutch out. The clutch release bearing is replaced when doing the clutch and after it was done the noise disapeared so I assume it was the release bearings.

TT bearings can also make noise, these can be rebuilt if worn out by some specialists at cost, its not an easy job removing the TT either.

When it comes to transmission noise I usually say this, if you have a noise but can live with it, dont worry, most of these cars have some kind of noise, even from new. If the noise is more excessive and you cant live with it, then you should probably look at getting it seen to.

I know the noise you mean Tom, i'd describe it as a sort of chirping, but it always occurs with the rattle when the gearbox is in neutral and the clutch engaged at idle. As soon as you disengage the clutch it goes and you don't hear it or the rattle when in gear and on the move. You certainly don't feel it through the transmission.

I think that you can hear it on the move when you back off the throttle. Its not as obvious as when it is in neutral as there are other loud noises but I'm pretty sure it does still make it.

Its not somthing im actually worried will fail, I just like to get to the bottom of things like that as it will definately annoy me. I will be doing the work myself assuming its not astronimically difficult.

I had a simialr noise to the grating in neutral when driving and changing down into 2nd and especially 1st, I think it was a sign the clutch was on its way out as now its been changed the noises no longer remain.

When was the last time the clutch was changed?

Edd

I'm sure its not the clutch. I've stood under the car while it was making the noise and it is definately coming from the gearbox or gearbox end of the TTube.
