Transmission Whine

Have just returned from a 45 mile round trip and shortly after leaving home there was a just perceptible whine from the transmission which was not there last week when I had the car out. It was easily heard in 1st, 2nd and 3rd but less so in 4th and 5th probably due to road noise. It is a 03 C2 Tip with 76K. Is the whine a sign of impending expensive doom or just something that higher mileage tiptronic boxes develop? To make sure it was the transmission and not wheel bearings or drive shafts I slipped the car into neutral and the whine immediately stopped. No warnings on the dash or any temperature increases etc - in fact the car performed as normal. Advice much appreciated please.

It's certainly not normal in my experience. I would go and get it checked out asap. I also wouldn't drive it far either.

Thanks for that. The noise has not got any worse and is definitely there in 1st, 2nd and 3rd but not in 4th and 5th. Will see if it develops before I take it the 130 mile round trip to my nearest OPC or Indy. Just in case and looking at the worst case has anyone got an idea what a new tip box is or whether there is anyone in the UK that refurbs/repairs them?
