I drove for 450 miles with one in the boot of my 968... Minus the rear spoiler so I guess that doesn't count. Also sent one via courier from Edinburgh to Kent (T3rra) and it made it.
What physically in the boot, one hatch inside the other ?

Something rings a bell way in the back of my mind, probably from Titanic well over ten years ago.
Didn't an owner work out that you could get the hatch in sideways, and with the front seats forward and some careful closing of the rear hatch it was possible?
Either way, I'd just hire a cheap van for the day myself and save the hassle. What's the saving if you turn up and it's too risky a fit, then go home and hire a van anyway? [8|]

I don't think humankind has yet invented something that doesn't fit in the back of an old Mondeo estate! []

No but funnily enough I know someone who owns one just like that.
I'm confident it would go as I have had a large running machine in the back. Its a good old motor (v6 ghia) best £1000 I have spent on a run-around[]
Anyway in the time its taken to type this work has given me the go ahead to use my works van.

Yes. Just a couple of months ago. And it stayed there for 3 weeks!
