Trickle Charging Boxster Battery

Hi Everyone,

It's that time of year again when some folk put their "loved" one away for its winter hibernation (or at least use their car less).

In the past I've suffered from the usual battery drain when the car has not been run for a month or so, this year I've purchased a Trickle Charger to try and keep the battery topped up, (mainly to stop the inconvenience of not being able to use the car at a moments notice).

Now, does anybody know of any do's and dont's regarding the use of a trickle charger (it's not the one that you can get from your OPC I have to say). I have this dread of connecting it to the car and then finding its done something horrific to the management chip or seciruity system?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation

What unit have you got?

There is a world of difference between a trickle charger (not to be used for long periods), and a battery conditioner (designed to maintain your battery for weeks or months at a time without damage).

Do NOT use a trickle charger (or battery charger on LOW) to maintain the battery for long (connected) periods. This is not what they are designed for, they are designed to charge a flat battery and constantly charge whilst turned on.

Battery conditioners that are SAFE, include units from:

Porsche,
Accumate,
Optimate,
Carcoon

These monitor the battery, and top it up witha VERY low charge until it is at the correct voltage, then turn the charge off until needed again.

I think I did a small article last year in PP at about this time on winter storage. It would be in the Boxster Register section if you have it.

Thanks everyone,

Could you let me know which PP the article appearead in? (I'm one of those sad people that keep all PP and Christophorus mags!).

Many thanks again,
John Longmore
