Trim issues

Just got a couple of interior trim type questions!

Firstly, how do I get the covers off the front speakers so that I can upgrade the speakers with new ones of the same size? There are no screws on the front panel so is it just a question of GENTLY (!) prizing off the front cover?

Second one... when i open the glovebox, the lid drops right down rather than stopping in a horizontal position. The two 'arms' pull out of the slots either side of the glovebox opening. If I reintroduce them into the slots and gently lower the glovebox door, it will rest in the horizontal position.

How do I fix it?

Still love working on the car because everything is attached with screws - big boys meccano set!![:D]

Thanks
Nick

I suspect you'll need to remove the door card, and almost certainly to actually change the speakers. There's an article on Clark's that looks easy enough, although I haven't done it personally.

I'm not so sure.

I changed the speakers on my Turbo without touching the door cards, but it did have different speaker covers to my Lux "¦ maybe Porsche changed things over the years?

On my Turbo it was dead easy. The existing covers just popped off with a bit of brute force: they were black painted metal mesh, glued along rolled edges. The old Blaupunkt speakers were held in with four screws each and came out without needing to touch the door cards. I laid a layer of sound deadening rubber in the spaces before fitting big sexy modern speakers, then complemented those with a custom-built bass box that slots into the rear storage cubby, beneath the carpet.

On my Lux, it looks just as simple but I've not investigated. It has flat plastic speaker covers with drilled holes. The covers are held on by four screws each that are clearly visible"”they seem to be screwed on top of a hole in the door cards. I'm pretty sure I could remove and replace without touching the cards.

Not sure how much of either car was standard. It's entirely possible that previous owners had already changed things.

A photo would be useful as I suspect these are no longer the factory speaker grilles. After 18 odd years there could be anything on there and possibly glued on. They should just snap off.

Pull them very hard until all the plastic tabs snap then glue them back on, make sure you get glue all over the speakers so they give a nice sound. Well thats what someone has done to mine in the past.

If your speaker cover is circular it is probably held on with plastic lugs and the whole cover will need to be 'unscrewed' to release the grill. Grab the outer rim and twist the whole cover anticlockwise by about an inch - you'll find it'll probably come off then and reveal 4 screws to release the speakers.

OK, here is pic of speaker grill, if I can work out how to post pics that is......![8|]

The metal grille is just pushed on and usually just pop off (the one on my s2 fell off evry time you shut the door)once it is removed the 4 screws are revealed that hold the outer black trim and speaker to the door.

Yep they are the same as mine, they have small plastic lugs, I think they should slide one way then lift off but could not tell you what way as mine have all snapped.

Had a better look at mine they have a big clip at the top and bottom then 3 smaller ones on each time, if you look you should see a small hole on the top, one on the bottom and 3 on each side. A small flat blade in these holes should release the cover.

The cover is mesh, with a plastic trim around it.

If you can seperate the two (easy), you can put some new paint on the mesh, which smartens it up no end. I used smoothrite and a brush, but an aerosol black would be better.

Oli.

Thanks one and all - Oli thanks for pointing out that my grills are a little tired looking.....!!![;)]

I just want to fit some new (same size) speakers to improve the sound a little in the front and smarten the grills up at the same time.

This forum rocks![:D]

As you can probably tell ([:D]) I am slowly working my way through the car and trying to improve things little by little..

All part of the enjoyment for me, especially on something as nicely engineered as the 944.

That said, my alternator has just started 'grumbling' although to be fair, when it went into Hartech for its initial belts & service after first getting it, they did flag up that the alternator bearings were a little noisy... How easy to change, anyone done it?

Thanks again
