Local rally driver Richard Sykes gave us a fascinating and enthusiastic talk. Richard currently campaigns a Citroen C2 R2 Max in the British Rally Championship, having first got into motor sport in 1987, competing in autograss racing with a modified Mini, which he described as the real "grass roots" of competition. He then converted his Mini for rallycross and in 1990 won the BTRDA championship.
A much modified Vauxhall Nova followed, used first for rallycross and then for his first season of rallying in 1996. The Nova was then replaced by a Peugeot 106, to compete in the 1999 season of the Peugeot Cup. By 2009 he was campaigning a Suzuki Swift, finishing third in the championship after breaking a drive shaft on the last event.
Richard now competes in the British Rally Championship Challenge Trophy using a Citroen C2, powered by a 1600cc, 16 valve engine delivering 200 bhp via a 5 speed sequential gearbox, in a car weighing 1030 kg and costing about £50,000 to build. His most successful season in the Citroen was in 2012, when he won all of the events except the last one to win the championship by a clear margin. The secret of his success? "Rallying is about finishing, points win championships, so whatever happens I try to finish the rally even if I am well down the field". This year he has a lady co-driver, Emma Morrison, for the first time, after his long term navigator Simon Taylor injured his back when they had an off-road excursion in a rally in Ireland last year.
