Tuning my beast...

Paul James

New member
I am planning on doing a bit of work on my 996 C4. A set of lowering springs (-30mm) and an exhaust system (with a loud noise and a 20 - 30bhp increase).

Could anybody point me in the right direction on where to get these things/what is the best option and where to get them fitted.

Cheers

Paul

Hi Paul,

Let us know how you get on with the 30mm drop in ride height, I have always fancied doing it but I already scrap my front end (GT3 front end), let us know how it is in real life?

Sports exhaust is a definite!

20hp or 30hp probably won't be so easy to obtain but you might want to look at getting it rechipped at REVO and then maybe a induction kit (but the jury is still out on if they make much difference) and the exhaust may help but again, not as much as you would hope, the exhaust will be more about the noise.

Have fun

30 mm drop will cause probs IMO, mine is 10m drop and it scrapes a lot. In fact the Ferry last year ripped the splitter off and I drove around without one for 2 months. Fitted a new one now, only 30 odd quid from the local OPC but it does still catch sometimes.

For the exhaust, I was looking at high flow cats, high flow boxes, the full set basically (here).......

I just cant help but look at my car and see how high it seems to sit with that body kit.

Before you drop the car talk to chris Franklin at Centre Gravity - he will know the optimum geometry and ride height for the car. A lot of owners of older 911s drop their cars too much, only for Chris to raise them back a little. For the sake of an email or a long phone call it might save you some time n money.

There is a German ebay seller who modifies the std exhaust fitting bypass pipes (like the Porsche PSE but without the solenoid valves) - not sure how much power they liberate, maybe 10-15 bhp ?.

There are an awful lot of exhausts out there, some with really wild claims, like this set of manifolds with a 10-20% increase claim (yeah right !)

Hayward & Scott might be worth a shot, especially as there is a lightly used set of boxes on ebay finishign today ! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PORSCHE-996-EXHAUST-MADE-BY-HAYWOOD-SCOTT_W0QQitemZ260316234604QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item260316234604&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1301%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

Milltek also do some nice exhausts which aren't too intrusive at low speed ;)

The only one i have seen make any difference to power on a 986 BoxsterS (less contorted routing than a 996 admittedly) was a supersprint system, that sounded absolutely fantastic and gave 15bhp extra on the dyno.

Whilst the £:$ ration is getting worse by the day it might be worth an email to Suncoast Porsche for a quote on a pukka Porsche system too.

Hi, I updated my suspension earlier this year to the M030 kit which includes dampers, springs and ARB's the drop on this kit is approx -15mm fromt and -10mm rear this along with a geo greatly improved the handling of the car. I have recently changed the springs on this kit for TechArt items and this has lowered the vehicle a further 20mm front and back, looks good and handles even better.

- No problem with speed bumps so far but I have standard PU on my car.

Thanks for the advice Simon, so do you reckon a 30mm drop would affect the car badly? It sits quite high at the moment...

Simon any chance of some pics? I would like to lower mine but don't want to compromise (to any major degree) the ride quality and practicality as I have the full aero kit.

Thanks

Don
