Tuning

Evening Chaps

The car is finally in for repairs. The head has gone off to be re-machined after the gasket failure... at the same time im getting new valve guides, a complete gasket and seal kit, new belts and rollers etc.. The engine should then be ready for some minor fettling..

Im thinking I would like to get to about 275brake and a similar hike in torque. (its a 250bhp model).

I know turbo tuning is quite a soft method of tuning for the stress on an engine and those figures should be perfectly reliable. Having read some of the poosts on tuning and researched a few websites I have come across 2 sites which seem to get mentioned a lot..Promax and Lindsey..although there isnt really a beginners guide to tuning anywhere, I can see that most owners cant help but fall down the slippery slope and wind up going well past stage 1..

according to both 275 is easily acheivable with just a simple chip and boost controller?

What other methods are there, and also what other things should I change at the same time.. I need a shopping list..

Chip (promax level 1/other?)
Uprated induction?
exhaust?
other

I had avoided the subject until now but surgery is well under way and I cant keep myself from opening the flood gates to suggestios and peoples experiences..

(other points car used weekends only, not overly concerned about fuel consumption, imaginary starting budget of £750)

Cheers in advance

Charlie

Charlie,
I have a 1989 car which now has 140k miles and had a Dual Port Wastegate, Chips, Boost Controller, Fuel Pressure Reg (3.0Bar), DV30 Dump Valve, VDO Boost Guage, Cometic Gasket, all fitted 40k ago. (Its how the car should have left the factory).
It should be close to your budget. It is a reliable fairly quick car which at 1.2Bar boost will achieve the 270 horses you are after all day long.
I got the whole lot from Promax.
I found they were helpful when fitting.
There are so many options open to you, but this worked for me.
Good Luck

I got 275bhp with the promax level 2 kit running 1 bar boost pressure with everything else being standard. 275 is a pretty easy target for our cars.

Hi Charlie, you are at the top of a slippery slope :ROFLMAO:

As you have a 250 car already with the larger Turbo then you should easily achieve your goal with a boost contoller to raise the boost to 1 bar and a matched set of chips to ensure the air/fuel ratio remains safe. Most chips should also require a 3 bar fuel pressure regulator to up the fuel pressure from the standard 2.5bar

Providing your wastegate is OK - you get 275bhp and masses of torque with just a boost enhancer & chips of your choice. You don't get much more power than that because the boost tails off at high revs back to factory wastegate settings. £3-400 should get you sorted. Boost will come in sooner & the car will feel much faster in the midrange with an extra 60-70 ft lb torque. Make sure you get it set up properly - measuring boost levels & air/fuel ratio.

My dyno charts here are a 250 turbo with AMD chips & Lindsey boost enhancer

http://www.cannell.co.uk/UKL%20G636EAD.htm

It's relatively easy to go further just by using a manual boost controller & dual port wastegate to hold that higher boost to the redline. You can probably find cars on Rick's website that have that sort of spec

I'm doing a bit more to my car - have added a Vitesse MAF as well [:D]. Once I get the DPW on later this year I expect to be some way past 300 [:D]

Oh yes - don't worry about induction. There are cars making way more power on standard airboxes. Removing the CAT may be a cheap option on the exhaust. I believe mine was gutted by the previous owner. I understand the cats eventually fall apart & start to block the exhaust, so removing it helps decrease back pressure & shouldgive you a bit more power..

Hi Charlie,my 1990 was dynoed(Weltmeister dyno) at 300bhp with chips and a boost enhancer, installed by the guys at Promax, everything else was standard you can achieve your figures with ease, you will get hooked as has been mentioned[:D]

Charlie,

Buy an S2. They are much better. And quicker.

Thanks chaps,

It certainly seems very easy to get silly real HP figures just by chipping and boost etc..

I remember when I had an old alfa that to get 30bhp youd be looking at the thick end of a couple of grand and wind up with an angry firebreathing pitbull under the bonnet.

My old mans griff made a 'real' 325 rwhp and curently runs at 300ish. That has had all sorts doen to it, different cams, injectors, twin throttle bodies, straight exhaust, chip etc etc.. http://www.greenbear.org.uk/More%20Power.htm and is the fastest car I have sat/driven in.

If it really is that easy and achievable Ill be taking the plunge as soon as the weapon arrives back from its freshen up. By the looks of things ill be rivalling his power in no time at all.! [:)]

Cheers

With standard turbo 300bhp is pretty achievable if you want more you are really looking at a larger turbo. For off the shelf kits you wont get much better than the Vitesse stage 3. Supposed to be good for 350 RWHP for about £2k. Thats just about the best kit in town at the moment I reckon.

Right, I see him................S2's have a very important role in donating Crankshafts to upgraded Turbo engines......we won't knock them because of that. And because they have such gentle power delivery, said 'Shafts are usually in excellent condition.[:)]
