turbo 2 do they slightly smoke on start up

is it normal for the turbo 2 to smoke slightly on start up its only noticeable in the garage not outside seems fine when driving i have driven it around 600 miles and stil doesnt need a top up of oil
 
Turbos warm up loads on the go but when they cool down the metal contracts again letting a little oil past bearing ,good news means ur turbo never dry when u start up , bad news little smoke on start up .................race turbos more gap,designed for longer periods full on, thence even hotter and more expansion lots of smoke ! It is possible ur Turbos are slightly worn but if its serious u ll start seeing leaks and know all abt it ..................if in doubt go and get it checked by someoen who sees plenty of turbos ..........
 
Never been a problem on my car but if I need to hand onto the key a bit longer (warm start) then sometimes I do notice a small amount of smoke.

Anyone know how even the pressure should be from the two exhaust pipes. I have noticed that on cold days only one of the exhaust pipes smokes (water vapour). When looking from behind it's the right one.

Any ideas?
 
I may be wrong but if the exhaust on the 964 Turbo is similar to the one on my 930 (which has an LE exhaust fitted) engine exhaust fumes only continually come out of the right hand side exhaust when the engine is running and none from the left hand side exhaust hence only water vapour from the right hand side on cold days. The left hand side is where the turbo wastegate is connected to and will only have exhaust fumes coming out of it when the wastegate opens and dumps the excess gases through the left hand side of the exhaust.

The left exhaust is for the turbo wastegate only - your principle exhaust is the one on the right. If you put the car on a rolling road, or let someone else drive it hard whilst you follow, you'll probably notice a small 'puff' of grey / black smoke come out of the left one when the turbo hits maximum boost and the wastegate kicks in.

You won't be able to see it for long as the turbo should be miles up the road within seconds[;)]
 
my exhaust is a hayward and scott it has fumes from each side it has manifolds each with its own single outlet pipes which join together at the turbo not like the standard exhaust which
 
Thanks for the reply - I was thinking I may have serious engine probs (feel a bit silly now)

That would also explain when the right foot is planted the exhaust noise changes dramatically.
