Turbo buy - Thoughts please ? ? ? ?

Hi guys. Well as some of you may have seen (those that frequent the other sections of the forum), I've been looking for a good 964 for some time now. Needless to say the search hasn't gone well after some months now. I'm contemplating a 944 (again, as that's what I nearly bought at the very beginning of this whole mission !! haha) and keeping some of the money back for now for other things. Given the choice what would you go for - an S2 or a turbo ? I know it's a very subjective question, but gimme your thoughts anyway.

The car will cover circa 5k a year and be used for the daily run now and again, but mainly for enjoyable driving. The S2 cam wear issue (or not as I may be corrected) bothers me a bit, and I like the thought of the turbo as I've never owned anything charged and fancy getting one and maybe some Lindsey racing bits and get some serious power ? How reliable are they overall ? Is it a stronger motor than the S2 ? I know it'll be more peaky to drive, as the S2 motor I thought was very gradual power and quite tame.

Cheers for your inputs guys,

Mike

Mine is for sale if you want a good one.

I'm in northampton so a fair way, but might save you miles in the long run.

Hi Mike, I faced a similar choice about a year ago. I opted for an early 944 Turbo in the end. After having looked at a few I found that the overiding factors became condition and history. There are a lot of cars out there that are very tired with little history.

I opted for a turbo that appeared in good condition with lots of history (ie regular oil changes if nothing else.) I then budgeted for a bit of fettling after. In fact, Promax have just had the car for a week sorting the clutch and brakes.

In the end the car still cost a lot less than an average 964 or even 968 but it really is a hoot to drive. I'm not sure what it would be like on track but for use on the roads I'm not sure you would need more. Good luck!

Details please to mdjoyce@blueyonder.co.uk I've travelled further in the past for a wasted journey so don't worry too much about the distance - If the deal looks right I'll travel.
